Big Up, Waris
New York, Paris
Call it tribal chic or ghetto fab, there's no disputing the originality of the elegant, intuitive jewelry coming from the House of Waris.
The enterprise was launched after a chance meeting in Los Angeles two-and-a-half years ago. While shopping at Maxfield, Waris (yet another one-name talent) was asked by the buyer where his two startling diamond rings — spanning three fingers on each hand — came from. Upon explaining that they were his own design, Waris found himself taking an order, thus launching his design "house."
His acting career began in much the same way. Casually asked by a director friend to keep 5 months free for a "project," Waris canceled a trip to his workshops in India and found himself plunged into the adventure that became the magical, marvelous
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou by Wes Anderson.
One thing led to another, as seems to be the case in Waris' life: while filming at the
Cinecitta studios in Rome, he found himself discovering, and then working with, a Roman atelier on his next jewelry collection. The pieces made in Rome are often cast in sleek white gold and encrusted with diamonds. From the Indian workshops come necklaces of carved smoky topaz, yellow gold and tourmaline pendants, and hand-hammered and drilled earrings — no two pieces are exactly alike. The diamonds here are discreet, not in the bling-y places you would expect to find them, but running down the outer edge of a miniature dagger, for example. Handmade wooden boxes add the final touch of luxury, with the House of Waris logo burned onto the hinged lid with an iron stamp.
Having personally delivered this new collection to
Colette in Paris and visited his workshop in Rome, Waris has recently returned to New York to begin his role in Spike Lee's
Inside Man, alongside Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, and Willem Dafoe. We welcome yet another member to the new guard of talented multihyphenates, designer-actors who continue to put a new face on fashion.
The House of Waris is available at
Seven (NY), Maxfield (LA), Colette (Paris), and Loveless (Tokyo).
