I'm literally TERRIBLE at drawing, seriously. I cannot draw to save my life, I'm trying to practise as much as possible, but i'm just terrible.

My friends are like naturals, pencil on paper. I wasn't born with this :innocent: ability.

Any advice, tips etc? :woot:

First, what are you trying to draw? And if you can hold a pencil, you were born with the ability.

Well, I'm trying to draw pretty much clothes in magazines. Things like that...
Very detailed clothes like Haute Couture etc....

Sweet. I'm going to have to say that you can't really draw clothes until you learn how they drape on people, but it's not hard. All it takes is practice, and the realization that you will suck for a while before it all clicks one day. So keep at it!

Go here and watch a few of these:

After a while the proportions and all that will sink in, so don't worry too much on remembering all the lines and all, just let it sink in.

^ Ok, I'm going to go through that.

Thank you so much! :) KARMA.

Maybe u can find a local art school that will teach you the basics? I'm sure that would be a great start.

detailed clothes...

Can we see some things you try to draw? ^_^

you could start with something easier. practice with bowls, cups, plain cloth, things like that...

It's always important to draw what you see, not what you think you see. :)

Also... we used this book in our drawing class.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
by Betty Edwards

There are different editions of this book --I think this is the most recent

^ That's perfect, I might go out and buy a book like that! :)

I'll scan some things, I have tried to draw. But they're not very good...:ermm:

You guys SO owe me. I'll be expecting checks in the mail soon.

Andrew Loomis was the baddest illustrator around. Here's some examples of his work:

His work is still the standard by which all other anatomy books are judged, and the problem is they've been out of print for 50 years or so. They go for ridiculous prices on eBay, but every now and then you get someone who gets a coy and scans it it, like this:

I suggest Figure Drawing For All It's Worth, 23mb.

as much as i hate it, you have to go basic first, i know its so boring but it really works. im in fashion desing and a year back i could sketch sh**. but after a few lessons of proportions of the body and the circles with lines and stuff helped me a lot. its just practice and more practice, trying different things like pencil or pastels or whatever you feel comfortable with. these are one from two years ago and one from a month ago.

wow those are gorgeous! well done!!!

I wish I could draw that well but somehow every figure I draw comes wierd.

I can draw perfectly if I copy a photo, but drawing from my imagination produces figures that are somehow just not quite right. I find human anatomy really tricky and I've been drawing for a long time. So don't worry about "not having talent," because the more you practice and more familiar you get with the human body, the easier drawing will become.

I think the advice I got early on in art school was to look at my paper as little as possible.

Also all those hours in-front of a still life is for a reason. It really does help. And if you want to draw clothes on people you have to learn the nude form first.

If you're drawing fashion what I do is sort of cheat.I use tracing paper and body outlines and use the tracing paper and simply draw the outfits onto the body shape and add features like hair, earrings ,and such.
