    My grandmother recently gave me two lovely polkadot skirts that I haven't gotten a chance to wear yet;
I just don't know how to wear them! I don't want to actually look like my grandmother!

One is a full 50's skirt, black with white small polkadots, the other is a red pencil skirt with white dots.

What would you wear with these to avoid looking frumpy?

:woot: congrats on your vintage polka dots caramel
plain, tight, one colour roll necks should do the trick,
black with the full skirt, red with the pencil one ;)

I'd match those with any old biker jacket or simple styled coats,
worn with either flats (for the full skirt)
or heels (for the pencil one which might look too boring with flats)

    enjoy :flower:

Lucky you! Nothing better than owning a vintage piece that was handed down by a family member. I agree with Lena although I'd probably wear heels with both, or maybe have the length altered to what is most flattering.

Lena's advice is probably the best. I would just say avoiding other traditional and conservative pieces with it. Skimpy tanks with funky coats and expressive boots seem in order for winter and during the transitional periods i've seen skirts like that paired with fitted plain tees maybe pearls-as-bracelet and opened toe heels.

You could also pair those skirts with white or solid colored button front man-style shirts. Its a simple way to keep everything subdued and not have the prints overwhelm you.

Hello to all you fashion gurus. This is my first post but have been a lurker for about two years and I have been addicted ever since. I do have a question about a dress I bought. I am not sure what color/type of footwear to wear with it. I don't have a picture but I will describe it the best I can.

It is a black and white Polka dot swing dress with a strapless neckline, fitted bodice and a full skirt. Also has a fake red rose pinned above the left breast and a red sash wrapped around the waist.

What color/type of footwear would you suggest for this dress?

    Thanks. :flower:

I think that it would be really cute dressed down a bit with ballet flats which could obviously be black or white. But you could go for a punch of excitement with mettalic silver if you liked.

That or classic 1950s style pumps with about a 3" heel (if you can navigate in heels).

    That dress sounds completely adorable!

Myself, I'd wear the ballet flats, because I am useless in heels, but a modest, classic high-heeled shoe would work, I think.

Red ballet flats or something kind of Mary-Jane styled would be cute, too. Just another little accent of color.

    ^ Sounds extremely stylish.

I own a couple of polka dot items, myself. Actually, quite a few. I  polka dots. With my skirts I usually wear something nice and sweet on top, a cami with minimal detail. With my polka dot tops, I always go solid on the bottoms, and try to pair with pants so the top isn't so loud. :flower:

To avoid that traditional frumpy look, pair them with something contrasting. Like a modern T-shirt or a racer back tank. I would wear the full skirt with ballet flats and the pencil skirt with slouchy ankle boots to lessen the 'office' feel of the skirt.
