blockarchitecture : Hussein Chalayan

The brief for Turkish Cypriot fashion designer Hussein Chalayan's shop was developed in collaboration through a series of "text maps" outlining relationships between a number of themes: cultural displacement; air travel and the imbuing of a sense of timelessness and charm within the space. Through this the ground floor became an internal olive grove with clothes hung from washing poles surrounded by aeroplane fuselage storage walls and backgammon tiles. The tiles also appear on the upper floor in the form of an internal courtyard. Here the airplane wall continues, augmented by aircraft service trolleys which allow for flat clothes display.
