I'm just obsessed with the Van Mossevelde duo's work not only for this magazine but also elsewhere. They're confident and it shows.
Luigi & Iango should stick to female models.
Casey Affleck? Although we should be shocked because they also commission Bruce Weber on the regular.
The arts community will predictably wet their knickers over the Polunin cover and clog my timeline with the fawning. He's not his usual dreamboat self here though. He reminds me of that Hedi Slimane-esque bad boy model, what was his name again? Russian, but raised in America. The one who had a rough upbringing. Yuri something.

Good covers. SUPERIOR compared to the mess we consistently call "L'uomo Vogue."

    Sergei is sex, tho.

This publication frustrates me. There’s so much potential for it to carry on the timeless and classic tradition of that modern masculine aesthetic of the past glories of L’UOMO/Vogue Homme/Aren Homme Plus. And from time to time, they do live up to that standard. This one being an anniversary issue really has no excuse to not go all out. The cast is solid— in particular Sergei, (of course) Tahar, Mahmood and Valentin. But the production is on the meek/forgettable/desktop publisher side. The best is Valentin’s, which does remind me of Franca’s Vogue and L’UOMO most (but then there’s the repugnant styling…).

I find myself magnifying through the spreads of thumbs of their past superior covershots, instead of being interested in the current stories. And that stupid “Juvenilia” abomination just sours the entire issue. If this is a men’s rag, why would they feel it’s good to include a bunch of pubescent boys that look even too young for Uniqlo????

Don't get me wrong, he is definitely attractive. For a type, lol. Especially as he's getting older.
But it's just tiring to see the dance community faff over the most minute detail of his life. He could cough and they'd pen a swansong about it, lol.

It's simply a tactic to court advertisers. Many advertisers won't consider print or digital publications that don't have a youth-centric strategy or 'market'. Because if a magazine or its audience is considered 'old', then so are the brands are shown in the book.
That's the reason why you will find Ralph Lauren and Armani in The Rake but not Gucci, Saint Laurent, Vuitton, Dior Man etc despite the fact that those readers actually have the purchasing power to afford all the random sublines these brands are always churning out.
They of course couldn't outright shun UK Harper's Bazaar despite aesthetic differences because the magazine's readers are proven to be high-income women and therefore command a sizeable chunk of the UK's luxury market. Way more than Vogue actually.

The funny part is that all ICON's youth-cast editorials stick out because you can tell that's not their demographic. It doesn't mesh with the rest of the content.

^^^ You’re right about the strategic luring of the big brands, of course. But no kid is going to bother with ICON the same way I wouldn’t even download i-D/Dazed for free these days. No kid even bothers with hardcopies nowadays, anyway. This is a generation that is used to the entitlement of such media being freely accessible online. Us oldies in our 30s are the ones that will gladly pay for a well-edited hardcopy— if they live up to our high standards, that is. A title like ICON should wake up to this reality and cater to us; then the advertisers will perk up their desperately-seeking-to-be-down-with-the-kidz ears when they see there're enough of us buying hardcopies and will even tailor their campaigns to us. Because right now, even if the likes of Gucci/Balenciaga/Vuitton were plastered all over ICON, I wouldn't touch those brands even if I were given it for free.

(Not sure The Rake is a good standard in which to argue against this whole gender-neutral-twink aesthetic; it’s too stuffy, dusty and grandfatherly. It's more reserved for the bespoke-wannabe types that loves these fussy rules— like what brogues must be worn with a Windsor knot etc Zzzzzz...)

Sergei just destroyed himself. He used to be such a beautiful man, now he's just depressing to look at (and to hear and to watch dance). I always thought the self-hatred would remain internal but I guess not, he didn't just 'reclaim' his body from the ballet world but single-handedly ejected it from society and now looks like the usual meth addict asking for a quarter at any corner of any American city. I don't know who even thought it was a good idea to put him on a cover, what does he even do anymore?

^^^ That may be… Still, the serial-killer Steven Klein eyes and the mullet, and those legs… If only he was shot by Steven and not Anton, there might be something worthwhile there.

So how good is this magazine performing at newstands? So maybe their strategy works for them.

About the covers, Valentin is the best, Sergei the worst. The rest just ok, they maybe felt pressure for the anniversary issue, its seems a little “not there” but maybe it’s just my perception.

There is one more cover with their past coverstars:
