I find them to be better dressed than most actresses, and thought it would be nice to start a thread for them. A bunch of them are featured in Verve magazine's Best Dressed List for 2009:

L To R: Nandita Mahtani, Rita Dhody, Akanksha Nanda, Haseena Jethmalani, Simone Singh, Malini Ramani, Priya Kishore, Kalyani Chawla

    India's Best Dressed List 2009
Text by Shirin Mehta and Sohiny Das, Realisation by Lamya Bhatri and Photographs by Vishesh Verma (Mumbai), Amit Dey (Delhi), Kaustav Saikia (Kolkata), Ramya Reddy and Waseem Khan (Bangalore) Published: Volume 17, Issue 10, October, 2009

    Hall Of Fame

The past year was rough. The dreaded ‘R’ word popped up everywhere. It was the survival of the fittest and the cheapest. Women bought relatively inexpensive items. Lipstick sales were good. Fashion sales were not (at full price); so tabs were slashed. Designers restrategised and redefined haute. Boyfriend chic (borrow his clothes since you have no new ones), vintage (borrow grandma’s for similar reasons) and power shoulders (intimidate at work-place so they do not fire you) rose to prominence. Even couture in Paris offered (hush hush) ‘package deals’ to their loyal customers. Suddenly, apparel was available at almost lipstick prices. What joy... let us buy everything!
Now the True Blue Fashionista (TBF) has been waiting for just this. She knows that the recession is not simply a challenge, but also a golden opportunity. This is the process that, just like separating solitaires from paste, will leave the wannabe riff- raff far, far behind on the sartorial run (way). Instead of being trampled on at a closing sale, the TBF has picked up investment-worthy pieces, full price. And updated her personal version of the season’s trends, in her own style.
Verve has kept a close watch on these leaders of India’s stylish pack. We have an edited list this year, including many known faces, a few unknown ones and have given some of our perennials (who have surpassed ‘judgement’ and ‘list-worthiness’ and form a league of their own) a breather. What is reassuring is the collective ‘style, not trends’ statement which resounds, proving that fashion’s mindset has matured.
Of course, we are still watching...

India's ultimate style icon - Maharani Gayatri Devi Rajmata of Jaipur.

She recently passed away. I don't think any of today's women in India can compare to her. She just oozed class and sophistication. She was featured in Vogue's 10 Most Beautiful List in the 1960s.

I really like the way she wore that Malini Ramani dress - with the hoodie. She pulls it off.

Hmm there are a few nice pieces, but overall, I don't see these girls as having style that's particularly fascinating. Some are kind of outdated too.

^most of them get totally worn by their clothes- and none of it is even that original anyway, it's just tons of expensive label clothes and tons of slap and high heels on top of it.
Priya Kishore is one of the few exceptions who tends to look comfortable in her own skin and Gayatri Devi ended up all but defining style in post-independence India, but normally I'd consider my own grandmother more of an inspiration, style-wise, than any of these women.

Style? I venture to say that only Maharani Ayesha Gayatri Devi had it out of all these women.Their husband's money cannot buy style.

^exactly! Most women who get called socialites in India are nothing more than the wives or daughters of the rich and/or famous. Copying outfits off Vogue or the runway doesn't mean any of these people has style or even taste of their own, it just means they have a ton of money (nothing wrong with that, but I don't see why we're expected to laud them for using it to buy clothes that leave them looking so ill at ease).

    :(

These women have no style at all; wearing designer names doesn't constitute as style imho. Alot of the outfits look frumpy on these women especially Natashs Poonwalla who has a talent for butchering every nice dress she wears .
