i find studying ink painting relevant to rendering fashion illustrations. they are similar in style, as they both are about light, shape and movement. :flower:

This reminds me of the sumi-e style (I think...). I love it, I like to try pulling it off with gauche, sometimes it works.:D

there's so much control of the flow of the ink in the second picture, it's so good.

yeah..definately sumi-e style. i wanted to start a thread on hokusai, and i'll try to find a few manga drawings he's done. by this i mean early manga, the illustrations of every day people engaged in every day life.

ink painting is like calligraphy too or watercolor. you can't take away..you can only add so i think it is more difficult because it takes a lot of control and expression, also there is usually the absence of color. you have to consider the composition as a whole before you begin...
i think it is most effective conveying nuances and line quality. it's similar to 3-D because it has the effect of carving out of the paper as if it were a dimenisonal thing. i was doing some painting recently and i cut my brush into a bamboo style and it greatly increased what i could convey...
