Just curious how the editors and stylists dress in your area.

Here in Europe there seems to be a few requesite staples:

-oversized dark sunglassesB)
-mismatched everything
-designer logo'd tennis shoes
-big slouchy bag
-lots of bracelets or big earrings or many necklaces at once

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with dressing this way, it just makes me giggle because I can see a mile away who's working in the industry. Guess it just reflects the current style taken to the Nth level.

For that matter there are stereotypical ways for photographers, makeup artists, hairstylists too.

What do you think?

there are lots of different kinds of stylists...
i think it depends on what kind they are as to what they wear...

also...i see very often that a stylist will adjust their appearance to suit the client they are working for that day or according to a story they might be working on at the time....

i think it's very different in europe though...
i think stylists are more 'out there' in europe and probably japan as well...

there is a certain something that makes it possible to tell if someone is an editor or stylist or assistant or whatever...
and i always wonder if people can tell that i am just by looking at me......
i hope not...i sort of go out of my way NOT to fit the stereotype...
keeps people on their toes...;)

Well .... it's weird, because I am a stylist and as a result ... I rarely see other stylists in person ... so I don't know what other stylists do.

I work in L.A. (casual capital of the world) ... in print mostly, ads, catalogs, magazine editorials ... that sort of thing. On set and on location, I pretty much wear what is comfortable to work in ... jeans (shorts for the summer) and easy tops with shoes that I can slip out of easily (so I can step on the seamless paper as I approach models on set). It's pretty much what everyone on set wears ... the makeup artists, the photographers, the assistants.

There's an old thing out there that some photographers get upset if you reflect color into his/her set by wearing light and bright colors, so if I have never worked with the shooter before, I tend to wear black or dark tops. And a lot of other people on set do, too. But if I know the photographer doesn't care ... then I don't either. Comfort is the most important thing, because what I do is very physical.

If I'm going to an interview, I will dress better .. but still often in black or somewhat subdued, but with maybe one cool accessory and good shoes. But I'm not young ... so I can't look very trendy ... or I'd look like I was trying too hard to look young. Just fashionably casual ... that's about as much as anyone does in L.A. unless it's an awards show ...then It's glam to the max for everyone.

downtown/Yorkdale Toronto: new gothic. Grr. They ruined it before I even got a taste of it.

Softgrey--juding by your other posts I think you've got something special going on! :flower: What did you wear to that small town to visit your friend a few weeks ago?

I'm really interested in all the posts here. I've been in Europe so long that I thought that we dressed the same all over.

Keep the comments coming! ...I'll try for those photos tomorrow. Didn't see anyone else working today.

thanks zrzava...i think.....

i agree with bette that comfort is key...

i find market appointments to be the most challenging...
becuase you want to look pretty good to meet with the pr people...
but you also have to be comfortable because you are running around from appointment to appointment...
and sometimes have to take the clothes with you...

*which can be pretty nasty in the hottest summer months or during a winter blizzard......

Softgrey, I totally agree. Last week I was meeting with a brand manager in our area. On the same day I had to pull 15 changes for a shoot, so I was wearing comfortable boots (Aerosoles...which they don't even have here so I thought I was safe!). Turns out the manager is a shoe snob and she kept glancing at my boots.

As if I'm going to wear expensive stilettos around town. We've got cobblestones here too--which is enough to make any girl in heels feel like Indiana Jones!

Anyhow, the meeting went well but I'm still at a loss to find the perfect outfit for a multi-tasking, busy day.

hehehe, this is only too true over here..
but still it always depends of the stylist..
my fave stylist Sophia has a style all of her own , so hard to put a finger to it since it changes with the mood in the air, which is what i so love about her style.
i like people who dont bore themselves
