Joan Smalls

^^That VK cover isn't her natural complexion at all. Look at her on the runway. Yes the lighting does factor into a model's complexion, but this is a combo of lighting & photoshop, just like her Vogue Germany cover. Her skin looks practically white on both covers. I don't really have a problem with the constant skin lightning/darkening though. I just find it shocking that you're not as outraged by this VK cover as you are by the V cover.

I see nothing wrong with her skin tone; it seems pretty natural. There are many factors as to how a person can look lighter or darker and it's not always about photoshop/whitewashing(for example dark lipstick, dark clothes, lighting, hair colour etc). Can we please move on? The cover is gorgeous.

Please... YES it is! That is her colour!
I already showed you plenty of proof.
If you want a darker model find a black model.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

I hate when people hire a mixed-race model than complain she's too light! Give me a break.

Then all I see is photographs compensating by making her an unnaturally "dark mannequin", ruining her natural beauty.

**:heart:She looks natural and beautiful on that Vogue Korea Cover and I hope more Magazines and photographers follow these example!! ;)

As for the V Mag, that is NOT her natural color and I am outraged!!

Less than 20 hours ago

And to my surprise even Black people complain about how they alter Joan's skin colour to make her darker!

I have met Joan and seen her around multiple times. Joan can look dark at times and light at others. She's not dark, but often times she's not as light as the images show her either. Her complexion is really weird to describe, it's kinda like golden caramel? Make up and lighting has a lot to do with how she looks in pictures, including selfies. Standing out in the sun will always make her look lighter as well.

Anyways past the subject of skin color... Joanie only has like two months left in her #1 position. I'm happy she's going out with 2 campigns (so far) under her belt + her EL contract. Now it's time for guessing games for who will take her spot ^_^

^^^There is no need for you to be so rude & crass in your posts, especially by telling me to find a "darker" model. Seriously? You're the one who is always advocating for diversity, yet you have a problem with clients darkening skin & no problem with them lightening it. You are right about one thing, though- we will have to agree to disagree on that VK cover. To me it's clear that they lightened her skin even based on the pics you presented. Now go ahead & post another gif like a mature adult. I've stated my opinion & will no longer entertain your antics.

Let's just all agree that photographers and post-production teams are inconsistent when it comes to Joan.

But I do feel like Joan's complexion is more accurately represented in the Missoni photos or even valliaddict's avatar. A lot of the "proof" in fashionlover's "case" comes from Instagram (which is never really accurate with filters, lighting, etc) or event appearances where there's obviously a lot of flash. Of course she's not super dark, but you can even see in the photo of her with the bicycle that she's not as light as in the other Insta photos or the VK cover.

So have I! Before and after her big break. Wink wink!! ;)

And I agree 100% with you!
Point, is It all depends on lighting, Tanning, Makeup and the seasons! ;)

Joan describes herself as caramel and Estee Lauder does as-well. We should stick with those reliable sources.

Anyways past the subject of skin color...
This! :flower:

cara?

Looool I think I know who fashionlover is now. He doesn't like when Joan looks dark because he doesn't like for people to call her black. If you post a pic of Joan on Instagram and use the tag #BlackModels he goes IN! Lol I did it once when I posted a pic of Joan + Chanel + Jourdan and he started tagging me in pics of Joan with a tan and without a tan. One of them said "mixed girl problems" and then added a whole bunch of hashtags to my page stating that she's mixed and she's brown, not black. Lol

ANYWHO....I'm so happy with Joan's work!! I hope she starts venturing into other things! I know she wants to get into acting and seems to be close with Lee Daniels...who knows! I think she does have it in her. Her acting looked pretty good in the A$AP Rocky (is that right? Lol) video with Michael K. Williams. I want her success to continue and I'm sure that's something we all can agree on lol ❤️

I thought we were moving on... I guess Not!!

From Joan's mouth herself.

“There’s been some debate in the media about what race you identify yourself as. Can you clear the air?
People always try to claim you, and I think that’s amazing —

Claim me all you want. I DON'T like specifically being in ONE category because I come from a family that’s diverse and multi-racial. My mother is Puerto Rican, she’s light skinned, but if you know what a Puerto Rican is, it has African, it has Taíno Indian and it has Spaniard, so I’m all of that. My father is West Indian from Saint Thomas. I’m just an island girl. I’m West Indian, I’m Puerto Rican, I’m African, I’m Taíno, I have some Irish in me, I have some Indian, so I’m just a proud mutt.”
