positive-magazineJulian Schratter has a garden in Brooklyn, a family in the Bay Area, a mission in Milan, and an obsession with capturing moments, energy, and memories from all and in-between.
He began taking photos in 2009 but prior to had dabbled in all types of expression. In 2010 the camera has become a completion of his being whether it is strapped around his neck, hanging from a chain, or inked in his skin. At the end of each day he remains humbled with the idea of self surviving and taking photos of his future children. It helps remind him that most of it is really bull**** and he himself really ain’t **** without the family, friends, and followers. 2011 till infinity he will take photos because it makes him feel good its just a plus if the photos make you feel good too.
How did you start taking pictures? Usually there is always the old story of the boy who finds his grandfather’s camera, did that happen to you as well or not?
I bought a camera because i thought that i should have one. An Impulse buy really, which became an expensive deadweight for a while traveling to Milan Paris and Greece and not taking a single photo. My next trip to Milan I wanted to capture the long lines and good times that aren’t your daily coverage. I got sucked right in though and now its about the photos..
Have you thought right away to follow the existing trends in photography or has it been a need to look for different styles and themes that have motivated you?
I look at things that i like and use those as influence or inspiration weather its an existing trend in photography or a Hunter Thompson article. Inspiration is everywhere its medium is irrelevant to me. If you get caught up in existing trends and doing something because everyones doing it or not doing something because everyones doing it then your paying to much attention to everyone else.
In a portrait, what is important for you?
emotion.
Witch kind of relationship do you have with your subject when you shoot?
Every interaction is different…thats why I cant stop shooting i don’t want to miss any of them.
According to you, fashion photography can be taken the old way or the digital format is predominantly the way to do it nowadays with no way back?
I think photography is relevant in all formats.
If we had to define fashion nowadays, how would you describe it?
People always ask this in interviews..ill give you the same answer
“The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior.” That’s from the dictionary.
What does it mean for you now “Streetphotography”?
I think that that term has broadened…with access to cameras on your cell phone and portable cameras Street Photography is everywhere.
What’s your last project that are you working on?
i should take a picture of my big whiteboard and show you some serious ambition..
recently…an exhibition in October. A few upcoming collaborations with videographers and Street Artist..…and of course continuing the the DAILY feed..
There are in these recent years a lot of emerging photographer (or something like that). In your opinion, if you have to give a tip to be different.. what are you going to think about?
Think bigger than people imagine…and imagine bigger than people dream.
