Supermodel Karolina Kurkova Chats Warmly with Prince Harry, Calls Him Surprisingly “Normal”
by Bennett Marcus
In his speech during lunch at the Greenwich Polo Club, Prince Harry praised the reception he has received on his whirlwind American tour and spoke passionately about his charity, Sentebale, especially its work with the children of Lesotho. “This is the last day of my tour around the United States. Thank you for a wonderful week,” he told the crowd. “I have witnessed the extraordinary generosity of the people of this great nation. . . . I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support that you have shown.”
Harry’s speech was all very proper, while his opponent, Nacho Figueras, captain of the St. Regis team, got everyone laughing, saying there were people at the luncheon taking bets on the polo match. “If you want to make a smart move, you obviously know that you have to bet for my team,” Figueras said, vowing payback for losing to Harry in Brazil the previous year. “Brazil was a lucky day for you,” Figueras told the prince.
After the formalities, Harry took his seat without ceremony and lit into his lunch of filet mignon and frisée salad. He spoke animatedly with Stephanie Seymour and Peter Brant, who were on his left, and Karolina Kurkova and her husband, Archie Drury, to his right.
The day couldn’t have gone better had it been scripted, with heavy morning rain giving way to afternoon sun, perfect for polo. And Harry brought the match to a storybook close, scoring the tie-breaking winning goal, bringing Sentebale to a 4–3 victory over St. Regis. The announcer wasn’t sure who had scored the winning goal, and Figueras gallantly rode to the stands and stated, aloud, that it was, in fact, Harry’s goal.
After lunch, Kurkova, who handed out the winner’s cup, told VF Daily that Harry talked about “normal stuff.” “He’s like anybody,” Kurkova said. She had met Harry once before, briefly, but this was her first time really connecting with him. “Everybody has some sort of preconceived idea, of course, about people, and at the end of the day, they’re just people,” she said. “They just want to have normal conversation.”
Fleets of cars provided by Land Rover brought attendees from New York City to the Connecticut polo club, and even at 11 a.m., many sipped the Royal Salute whisky that was everywhere at the outdoor reception—to ward off the rainy chill, naturally.
There was a range of horsiness among the guests, from Jason Wu, who, though a novice, rode daily on a trip to Uruguay (yes, he was sore, but it was great fun), to Valentino, who keeps four horses at his property in France and rides regularly when he’s there.
And Peter Brant Jr., whose father founded the Greenwich Polo Club, is a chip off the old block. He rides and plays polo. “I’ve fallen off my horse a couple of times,” he said modestly, “but everybody has.”

Prince Harry Kissed By Karolina Kurkova After Polo Cup Win
Prince Harry's visit to the United States was sealed with a kiss -- from a bonafide supermodel! The 28-year-old royal walked away a big winner at the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup on Wednesday, May 15.
Harry participated in the Sentebale charity match at The Greenwich Polo Club in Greenwich, Conn., and model Karolina Kurkova was there to cheer him. "I'm excited to be with Harry today," she told Us Weekly. The 29-year-old coach on The Face had the honor of giving Harry his congratulatory kiss as she presented him with his trophy -- but it was just a polite peck on the cheek! (Kurkova is married to actor/producer Archie Drury, and they are parents to 3-year-old son Tobin.)
