About time she had her own thread here.
Name: Kate Dillon
Agency: Wilhelmina
Bio from Wilhelmina:
Glamour magazine called her the "Curvy Comeback Kid," MODE magazine named her "1998 Model of the Year" and Liz Claiborne chose her for their advertising campaign.
At size 14, Kate Dillon is sweeping up in the full-figure market. Within just 18 months of signing her Wilhelmina Models contract, she dominated the pages of MODE magazine's premier issue, was featured on Times Square billboard and landed a national commercial spot for Playtex. Now in her third year with Wilhelmina's Ten-20 Division, Kate Dillon is just getting started.
Kate started modeling at age 16 when a talent scout found her in a San Diego cafe. Elite Models-New York signed her immediately, and soon after, every major fashion magazine featured Kate Dillon in its editorial pages. She booked major campaigns such as L'Oreal, Missoni, Christian Dior and Sport Max. She, likemost top models, spent time in Europe developing her book and walking the Paris and Milan runways. But that all came to a bitter halt when at 5'11", age 19, she was a sickly bony size 6. "I wouldn't admit I was anorexic at the time," she says, "even though I ate less in one day than most people eat in a single meal." After turning to a nutritionist, Kate gained 15 pounds, which her agency at the time was not happy to see. Nor were her clients, as they called the agency to say she looked awful.
Kate tried to lose weight with little success. When her agent accused her of not trying hard enough, she had a life-altering realization, "I don't have to do this and never have." She quit modeling and moved back to San Diego where she blossomed to a full size 14. She was determined to not hate herself for the way she looked. "I started trying to accept my body," she says, "I realized I can fight it, or can forget about it and focus my energy on something more productive." This newly adapted attitude proved to be a major turning point in her life. "I gave myself the freedom to be who I was, the freedom to be smart, goofy or whatever - the freedom to just be myself."
After a two-year hiatus in San Diego, Kate returned to New York and shorty after a friend suggested she try plus-size modeling. In March 1996, a rejuvenated Kate walked into Wilhelmina Models where she signed on the spot. "I feel like I've come full circle. When I quit I thought I'd never model again and here I am back at it, only this time with a voice and the ability to make a difference. For example, the other day I was recognized on the street by a young girl, who had a similar body as me, and I realized my work might have helped her to feel more beautiful. That realization is simply amazing to me!" When meeting her, it's very apparent that she is comfortable with herself. Her newly adapted attitude of freedom has been a major part in her success as a full-figured model.
At size 14, she once again models nationally and internationally. Kate recently spoke at Havard University during National Eating Disorder Week, and lectured at her high school in San Diego during their health week. She has appeared on television shows such as the Rosanne Show, Preventions: Body and Sense, CNBC, MSNBC and was a guest on the Maureen O'Boyle show and Today in New York where she took the opportunity to make a difference.
