Narrabeen’s Kawani Prenter, 16, storms Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia
CAYLA DENGATE MANLY DAILY APRIL 14, 2015 10:35AM

Northern beaches models are stealing the show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia with a 16-year-old Narrabeen girl leading the way.

Kawani Prenter is a Year 11 student at St Luke’s Grammar School and a regular at North Narrabeen Beach, but this week, she’s the celebrated “it” model who was chosen to close the prestigious Carla Zampatti 50-year anniversary show at the Opera House.

She’s since opened the Bec and Bridge show at Carriageworks and was set to walk for Alice McCall at 5pm tonight.

Miss Prenter said it was the first time she’d walked formal shows in the national week and she was sharing her experience with the whole family.

“Opening Bec & Bridge was amazing because my mum and dad and sister and grandma and grandpa were all there and they had no idea I was opening.

“Apparently my grandma was crying.”

Miss Prenter’s father Kieron runs restaurants Mexicans and MX while her mum owns Newport boutique Kawani.

“My mum is crazy about fashion, she loves dressing me which I don’t complain about because I always have new clothes and I love her style,” Miss Prenter said.

“She has lots of amazing bags which I’m allowed to use on special occasions but unfortunately my feet are bigger than hers so I can’t dig into her hundreds of amazing shoes.

“Fashion is very important in our family and I love it — even my dad is conscious about what he wears sometimes.”

She said her favourites at Mexicans were the fish tacos and prawn ceviche.

“Then for drinks, there’s a bartender Ollie who makes the best virgin margaritas,” Miss Prenter said.

Miss Prenter was a child model for the likes of Big W but at 14, she was noticed by a talent scout for IMG Models.

“I was spotted at a barbecue on the northern beaches,” Miss Prenter said.

While there’s no doubt Miss Prenter’s modelling *career is set to take off, she said she took her studies seriously.

“I really just want to finish school and then I’ll go straight into modelling,” Miss Prenter said.

“My dream is to go to Paris and New York and open a show — it’s such an amazing feeling to be first out.”

When she’s not modelling, Miss Prenter said she was like any other northern beaches teenager.

“I love lazing about the house and going for long walks around the lake at Narrabeen, we live on the beach so in summer me and my little sister Yasmin are out surfing with our dad most days, if it’s small,” Miss Prenter said.

Fashion's freshest faces: Kawani

Kawani, 16, is the first profile in a series of Honey shoots introducing the new wave of Australian models.

For Kawani Yumi Prenter, fashion is in the blood.

"My mum is crazy about fashion, she loves dressing me," Kawani told the Manly Daily. "Even my dad is conscious about what he wears sometimes."

But she has more to thank her parents for than just style.

"At 14 she already stood at 5'9''," says IMG Model Manager Simone Hellicar. "Along with her exotic looks, Kawani was a perfect fit for the industry."

"Her heritage is Japanese, Brazilian, Irish and Australian, which contributes to the wide range of diversity in talent that IMG represents."

The former St Luke’s Grammar School student already has a swathe of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia shows to her name, including Carla Zampatti, Galanni, Alice McCall, Steven Khalil, Gary Bigeni and Bec & Bridge (the last of which she opened, moving her proud grandmother in the audience to tears).

She also boasts a truly Australian discovery story and one befitting a Narrabeen native: she was scouted by IMG Models while at a friend's barbecue.

In other words, she has all the hallmarks of a promising fashion export, and it seems the international industry agrees.

"Her unique look has caught the eye of photographers and casting directors, who are always looking out for a new face that can emulate the look of the season as well as remain timeless," says Hellicar.
