GP teen loving life on the runway

Patti Chabot (left) and her daughter Kayley, 16, pose for a photograph outside of the Daily Herald-Tribune office on 100 Street last week. Kayley is home for a short break from her job as a model with Ford Models of New York.
While many teenage girls are fighting over boys and stressing over homework, one Grande Prairie teen is living her dream as an international runway model.

Kayley Chabot submitted her photos to the modelling agency Mode Models in Edmonton at the age of 13. She was almost instantly signed with the organization; it wasn’t much longer until the 5’11” brunette started to catch the eye of international modelling agencies.

At the age of 15 Kayley signed with Ford Models out of New York. Now she is 16-years-old and travelling the world modelling top-tier clothing on the catwalk.

Kayley, who mostly lives in New York, landed home in Grande Prairie last Thursday after modelling for Fashion Week in Paris, Milan and London.

It’s the second time this year she has participated in the program.

It’s not just the runway that consumes most of the teen’s time, she has also been featured in V Magazine, Interview Magazine, and Elle Canada, to name a few.

Though they’re two different worlds, Kayley said she loves modelling in front of a live audience just as much as she loves modelling for the camera.

Her mother, Patti Chabot, said it’s been surreal watching her daughter fulfil her dream job.

“She told me that she wanted to do this when she was like two-years-old. She said she’s going to Hollywood and she would be either an actress or a model,” Patti said.

The dream can be challenging at times, Patti added.

Kayley is only able to come home two-to-three times a year.

“I freaking hate it,” Patti said. “Of course mom and dad are very supportive because this is obviously something that Kayley wants to do. But, I don’t get to be a mom because she’s in New York and Europe.

“She went to Europe last year all by herself, talk about mom freaking out and dad freaking out. The first three days in Milan she didn’t have a phone, so you want to talk about a cranky mom,” Patti added with a laugh.

Patti said when Kayley comes home she has plenty of stories to share with her mother, though some make her head spin, she has confidence in her daughter.

“As a parent you don’t want to control what your kids do, but at least you’re there to guide them in case they do make stupid mistakes along the way. She’s a very mature young lady and she’s grown up a lot, we’re putting a lot of trust into her and putting a lot of trust into her agency,” Patti said.

Kayley agreed with her mother, confirming that she had to grow up quicker than planned.

“Oh my gosh, I’ve learned way too much. I don’t know, I’ve just learned how to take criticism, I’ve learned that you cannot compare yourself to other people and learned how to travel, buy my own groceries, I’ve learned a lot, balance money, I’ve grown up a lot,” Kayley said.

Learning is something Kayley will have to continue to do. She and her mother agreed that education is number one, and that the modelling gig has an expiry date.

“I’m trying to do online schooling, it’s hard (to balance) because you have so little time,” Kayley said, who is in Grade 11. “When you’re working all day you just want to get home and go to sleep, and then you have an early call time. You have to try to find time to fit it in. I’m going to work hard at it because school is more important than anything to me.”

Patti echoed the same thought.

“A kid has a dream, we all have dreams, but we always said school’s number one. This is awesome, but you need something to fall back on if this doesn’t work out,” Patti said.

For the meantime, Kayley said she’s going to live one day at a time, absorbing as much of her experience as she can.

“It’s been amazing and awful at times. For the most part it’s really good because you know that when you’re stressed out, you’ve been working so hard, you’re jet legged and haven’t slept for three days, in the end, it’s worth it,” Kayley said.

I've had the pleasure of talking to Kayley on tumblr for the past few weeks, she's such a sweet girl and she has a great sense of humor, it's hard to believe we're both 16, she seems lightyears ahead of me in terms of maturity. I wish her all the best!
