A true original... Klaus Nomi. I thought he deserved a thread.

From wikipedia.org
Klaus Nomi (January 24, 1944 - August 6, 1983) was a German countertenor noted for remarkable vocal performances and an unusual, elfin stage persona. Nomi is remembered for bizarrely theatrical live performances, heavy make-up, unusual costumes, and a highly stylized signature hairdo which flaunted a receding hairline. His songs were equally unusual, ranging from synthesizer-laden interpretations of classic opera to covers of 1960s pop standards like Chubby Checker's "The Twist" and Lou Christie's "Lightnin' Strikes".

Klaus had just returned from his first European tour. When I heard that he was back in town, I called him to tell him that we wanted him to come to Boston and could pay him $3000.

Klaus told me that he wouldn't be able to perform in Boston.

I said, "Why not?" Klaus said, "Because I am sick."

I said, "Well, when you get better." He replied, "I am not going to get better."

Klaus was the first person I knew that had AIDS. He died in 1984.

The look on his face... :(

He is fantastic, great music . If you like him I would recommend to listen Diamanda Galas .

he's so great. i can't get any of my friends to like him. the things you discover from leaving vh1 classic on all day!

If you like him I would recommend to listen Diamanda Galas .
I'll take this recommendation in reverse, being a Diamanda fanatic who never applied herself to Klaus Nomi, regrettably, but will not neglect to do so much longer...

Thank you for the music recommendation hellimaria.
I've just Youtube'd her and I do see a few similarities in their music. :)

I wish there were more pictures of Klaus on the net...

it's about time we have this thread!

I LOVED him.

I used to listen to his albums repeatedly in high school.

Joel Grey's character in Cabaret always reminds me of him. and vice versa

Proof he inspires fashion designers.
I think there was also Klaus Nomi for the runway soundtrack.

Just a quick note on the mechanical doll. Pat Keck made this from wood. It is fully articulated & her dad, an engineer, helped her with the hydraulics. When one steps on the pedal, Klaus would rise up from the dead. He would sit up & his head comes forward & his arms move as well. His sarcophogus is decorated with the lyrics from Cold Song by Henry Percival around the edges. A sort of fond farewell memorial to Nomi. How cool is that?
