The president of American club Los Angeles Galaxy has reportedly confirmed interest in former England captain David Beckham of Real Madrid...

What do you all think? I think it would be great for him b/c I can see David and Victoria thriving in the L.A. lifestyle and they already seem to have a base there. And I think it would really increase interest in soccer here b/c he's such a huge name in sports. I think it's sad that soccer isn't more popular here.

^^ I absolutely agree. I think they could actually shake up American and LA culture, and for the better. We've gotten so caught up in worshipping the Lohan/Richies of the world, who aren't really famous for much of anything. And I think it would be a breath of fresh air if they came Stateside!

Thanks for posting!

Yeah, I think it would be good if they moved to LA. But on the other hand, it would be good if David could stay in Real Madrid, since it's a really good football club.

^ He's past his prime and on the decline but yeah, it would be rubbish that someone with his skills plays in a country where football is near to nothing. He could go back to England but he insists that if he does, it must be back to Man Utd. Putting limitation like that in unwise if you seriously wanted to return to England.

IMHO, if he stays at Real, he's just going to keep rotting. I wish he'd consider going back to the Premiership. I think if he did go to the States, Posh is the winner and he, the loser.

Actually guys, in the past several games he's had at least one goal in each.. That's not pass your prime.

I too live in a country that football is not the main sport, hockey is. However, with the popularity of World Cup and European cup on the rise.. I wouldn't be suprised if that too changed.

I'm all for it and WELCOME with open hands and season tickets the Toronto FC to the MLS.

I'm Canadian AND FOOTBALL runs through my veins..

As long as he doesn't come to D.C. United....

I think the money could be better spent, but the upside would be all the attention on football AKA soccer. I wish the sport was popular here. During the World Cup I was jealous of the countries who were going all out celebrating their nation's team! It must be awesome to go to a soccer game where the stadium is actually full lol ; )

Meh.......people would probably only go to the games to see Victoria Beckham.

Once the fascination w/ the Beckham's wore off, the stadiums would probably be empty again.

The Galaxy should save their money and Beckham should save his time by just staying where he is.

LONDON — David Beckham agreed to a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, leaving the Real Madrid club at which he enjoyed worldwide popularity but experienced disappointment on the field.
Beckham, the former English captain who also starred for Manchester United, will join the Galaxy after his contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30. Los Angeles opens its season April 8 in Houston.
"I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own," he said in a statement released Thursday.
The move was announced following the end of talks on extending the 31-year-old English midfielder's contract with the Spanish club. MLS recently changed its rules on salary caps, clearing the way for Beckham to sign a lucrative deal. British news reports put the Galaxy deal at $250 million.
"This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons," Beckham said in the statement. "After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year."
Beckham has soccer academies in London and Los Angeles. His wife Victoria, a former Spice Girl, was recently photographed househunting in Los Angeles.
"David Beckham will have a greater impact on soccer in America than any athlete has ever had on a sport globally," said Timothy J. Leiweke, president & CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Galaxy. "David is truly the only individual that can build the bridge between soccer in America and the rest of the world."
Beckham joined Real Madrid in 2003 after a hugely successful run with Manchester United, where he won six league titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League title. But Beckham did not win a single major trophy with the Spanish club, and his spell coincided with Madrid's worst slump since the early 1950s.
Real Madrid has had six different coaches and three club presidents during Beckham's stay, but the club has made a fortune — in part because of the star's position as a cultural icon for soccer fans and non-fans alike, including men, women and children of different ethnic and racial groups.
His marketability was emphasized by the hit movie "Bend It Like Beckham," even as his skills deteriorated with age.
Beckham's contract included a clause in which half his image rights would go to Real Madrid. That helped earn the club millions, allowing the Spanish team to overtake Manchester United as the biggest earner in world soccer.
Beckham led England to the quarterfinals of the World Cup last summer, scoring from a free kick in the second round to beat Ecuador 1-0. But he was taken off the field early in the second half against Portugal with ankle and Achilles tendon injuries, and then watched as his team was eliminated in a penalty shootout.
A day after the game, Beckham stepped down as captain of the team — a post he had held for 58 of his 94 international appearances. Then, on Aug. 11, England coach Steve McClaren dropped Beckham from the team altogether, signaling the end of his international career.

^^Totall crazy, athleates are payed so much these days its insane.
He will actually get in total 250$ millions-now that is unreal!!!

Better to burn-out a star than fade-away a football player for Beckham then...

  That is absolutely ridiculous. But I'm not complaining if it means that the Beckhams dont come back over here, although moving again might unsettle their kids as they've just got used to being in Spain and now there off to LA...

^^It really is ridicilous,i think all these sportsmen are overpayed.
Imagine that;he will get 1$ million a week and that dosent include financing heavily by endorsements and including bonuses based on performance and the future success of the MLS.
Its just crazy money but its the way the deals have been done in Sport world for years.

i think they are turning a page... Europe was no longer good for him .. if anything, he made the right choice!

ciao ciao :bounce:

^^I think its a right choice too, perfect timing,i just thought it would be New York!
But he never hide the fact that he wants to retire in US in the first place.
I think they can have a great family life there and Victoria can work on her little projects.......
