Cloak is amazing quality. Just got a jacket from F/W 04 and everything about it is incredible. Definitely worth the money.

Jurgi Persoons(if he were still designing...even not,I would still pay alot to have some of his extraordinary previous works)
    Preen
    Boudicca
    Bruno Pieters
    0 MMM
    Bernhard Willhelm
    Robert-Cary Williams
    A.F. Vandevorst
    Carol Christian Poell
    Raf Simons
    Jessica Ogden(especially her quilted pieces)
    Marc Le Bihan
    Susan Cianciolo
    Alexander McQueen
    Hussein Chalayan
    Christophe Coppens
    Tim Van Steenbergen
    Under Cover
    Anne-Valèrie Hash
    CLOAK(as explained already)

Designers I would pay more for:
Little Red Riding Hood(Berlin)-it's really quite shocking, for as much craftwork they do and their experimental construction that they charge so little.

Designers I would not pay retail for:
Libertine-no,sorry. I still don't understand what's so great that they'd justify 1800$ for an existing vintage trench coat with a bit of seam work and silk-screened prints. It's ludicrously priced and would only buy their pieces if they had it on ebay for a fraction. And what they do actually make from scratch I find incredibly boring and plain. Like their t's.

But even those two are "over priced" in certain degree.

Vintage Hermes, and vintage Goyard. Also vintage Asprey as well as certain anonymous English leather firms with quality that is simply nonexistent these days.

Yohji Yamamoto is very high quality as well as visually interesting.

Thierry Mugler used to be very high quality; I am not sure of their recent revival with Thomas Engel Hart.

    Vintage Claude Montana

    Comme des Garcons

    John Lobb

    Corthay Brothers.

As for Louis Vuitton, as overpriced and overexposed it may be, their quality is still high.

I´ve got the feeling that some people misunderstand this thread as "where do/would you like to shop?", I think it was originally meant to elaborate which designer is producing good quality for the money that you are paying for the clothes.

    Amen!

It's a social psychological fact that you will tend to see your "important" purchases in a good light. It's almost like you're defending or justifying your choices by adding some real or imagined intrinsic value to stuff. Of course you will value the clothes from the indie/luxe designer you're buying from.

I will say that I've seen awful, shoddy workmanship from hyped indie designers as well as luxe status labels. I won't point any fingers, everyone makes mistakes...

From a strict quality point of view, *some* of the labels where practically everything I've seen is very polished and well-made are Gucci, Jil Sander, BV, Hermès, CdG, Yamamoto, Miyake and Mulberry. I wouldn't necessarily want to wear all these, but still...

^ Just to clarify, when I say "polished" I mean nicely finished. Attention to detail and all that.

i much more prefer to spent on vintage in good condition than in 'modern' produced items..

i was almost surprised to see my post on this thread from years ago..
seems that i'm totally sticking to my initial reply posted here on page 1

    love them

    Narciso Rodrigez
    Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti
    Alessandro dell'aqua

I guess Alessandro stuff are a bit pricey and also not very versatile...but so pretty!! Narciso stuff are really comfortable, chic and the cut is immaculate.
Ferretti stuff is elegant, yet comfortable ^__^

Just to clarify after reading the last few posts, I'm not justifying anything here. I'm not even keeping the jacket because it doesn't fit. But the detail and construction is top notch...same with other pieces I've seen. So my assessment on Cloak stands.

Why so arrogant, tott? The initial post is about what's worth you paying good money for. It's as easy as that. What exactly compells you to believe that the intentions weren't ultimately about good quality? I find it a bit insulting that you seem to think many of us are fools.

I did not mean to be arrogant or imply that you or others are fools, and I'm sorry that you feel insulted.

I would disagree about Burberry ... the few hundred dollars I spent for my Burberry trench (that I'm still wearing) on sale some 18-19 years ago was some of the best money I've ever spent.

It's really rare for me to feel that every dollar was well-spent on a non-diffusion designer purchase. I don't have very good access to smaller names here, unfortunately. I feel I shouldn't have to spend as much as I do to get interesting clothes. At the same time I am unwilling to wait for things to go on sale, because I like few enough things that I want to get my hands on them & enjoy them the entire season & not be disappointed by sellouts.

I'm glad you have had a good experience with Burberry, because I on the other hand, have not. One of the two Burberry bags I bought practically fell apart! Congrats on the awesome buy, though*
