LACOSTE BITES BACK
PHILIPPE LACOSTE, CEO of French fashion and sports brand Lacoste has threatened to pull out of the lucrative Chinese market if it fails to stop a Singapore-based rival from copying its trademark crocodile logo. This comment came days after the company lost a lawsuit in a Shanghai court, and signified the possibility of the brand withdrawing from the China region because of rife counterfeiting, despite its proven potential to be one of Lacoste's top three markets in 10 years. The dispute is over the use of a logo by Singapore-based Crocodile International. Lacoste's crocodile faces right while the Singapore firm's faces left. Lacoste is suing Crocodile International over use of the logo. Of the €4 million Lacoste spends a year fighting piracy, half is spent in China. "I believe we will ultimately be successful. We had our trademark registered first. The law is very clear about that," Philippe Lacoste has said. (March 31 2004, AM)
