Well! I'm of two minds about this: a part of me, very tiny part of me is going, "oh great, another colonialist fantasy about exotic India." But the other part of me is pleased to see Lakshmi in the role of Memsahib, it certainly subverts expectations. Also, I love the contrast of the clothing against her complexion - I'm so tired of seeing alabaster models and very little diversity in high fashion advertising.

? The only other international one I can think of Ujjwala Raut also looks Indian and models in India do as well. I think you are confusing indian models with bollywood celebrities.

I agree with shandie. It's also important to note that Bollywood actresses aren't representative of Indian women (even lighter-complexioned Indian women) any more than, well, Hollywood actresses look like American women. There's too much artificial gloss and airbrushing involved.

This is one of those moments wherein I wish that I had some control over who gets cast for what / which models are given the best jobs. As evidenced in this Hermes ad Lakshmi is a model with a natural talent for posing and a beautiful look that is both feminine and sensual. She's just off the charts - much moreso than many other models who are very popular right now. I truly, truly hope that this campaign leads to many other great things.

Haha, it's been ten years since I took bharatanatyam, so I couldn't really say. I mean don't even remember the names of the stances (or the finger positionings) anymore.
It's just something about her relaxed (but still upright) pose, and the criss-crossed legs that puts bharatanayam in mind, I guess.
