LaQuan Smith F/W 2022.23 New York

Stunt casting of Julia Fox, to hide the fact that he has nothing to say with his clothes. His clothes always look like a Fashion Nova version of Tom Ford's Gucci.

Alex White, girl what are you doing here? Comeback to Prada. This isn't you. There's nothing for you to do here when the clothes already look like this.

Will they ever stop copying that awful Mugler dress? It wasn’t good nor tasteful when first presented…

Julia Fox was unexpected for the casting, and I still don't really know who she is, but that dress is terrible. Also, the model in look 21 looks a little startled to say the least.

For a designer that tries to be brazenly sexy and embody a type of femme fatale, he isn't very good at flattering the bust. So squished and unsupported.

^ dating kanye

there are a couple of looks that are nice but yes mostly pretty bad

He attends regularly Tom Ford shows and it shows and in a way, the Fordism he is adding to his vocabulary kinda feels «passé» because Tom did them already and with maybe more confidence in his interpretation of sexy.

That being said, this is probably one of Laquan’s best collection yet. The fabrics looks nicer, the cut has a little bit improved and finally there are clothes that his clients can wear outside of a club…

The red sequined outfit and the red sequined coat are great.

It’s still trashy but we have seen worse this week.

^^^ If I’m feeling generous, his designs no longer look like he’s dressing strippers. And the cast of fit and lean women is so much appreciated in these days of casting mediocrity. Unfortunately, now his clientele seems to be the wife/mistress/GF of Adam Sandler’s character in Uncut Gems. And Julia is the perfect mascot for this type of dressing, in that sense. Which means it’s all so hugely, glaringly derivative and still overcooked in that knock-off of Tom Ford’s Gucci aesthetic. The added bonus of Chrome Hearts-esque bling just adds to how outdated his sensibility is. You know, when the thumbnail looks better than the HD image, where all the details revealed how painful that it is all reliant on design, with absolutely nothing to offer in the dressmaking and construction component.

Construction is still shoddy and i don't see any growth in that area. The construction and drape has to be spot on or instead of looking like a bad b*tch, you end up actually looking cheap.

The cargo moto pants are actually pretty great. This collection would be better if it was edited down. There are many looks that don't belong and what I take from that is he is likely trying to show versatility, they are boring and don't show who he is as a designer. Maybe more time honing his craft and doing research on his inspirations would benefit. The Tom Ford-isms are still too prevalent.

I don't mind the stunt casting. I like the energy of the show.

He, like most of his peers, are far more interested in being designers than they are in designing.
Perfectly said.
Designers today loves the attention, the influence, the glitz and the glamour behind the idea of being a designer.

So few of them seems to be interested in techniques, cut, fabrics.

There was a time when young designers felt like they have to prove themselves. They had to convince the press and get respect from their peers.

Now, they just want to dress people they want to hangout with.

People like to talk about Alexander McQueen. When you look at « the Highland r*pe », it’s impossible to imagine that the same person would be behind « Sarabande ». That man worked on his craft and his vision became sharper….

Both of yous dior_couture and Lola are so right. It sucks but it's just the times have changed I guess. People have different goals and different role models. If you do what you love, success is secondary. But if fame and success are primary... you get all the people on the 2022 NYFW calendar trying to be "designers" that are so desperate to pretend they're instantly a name like McQueen or a "brand" like whoever. Why would anyone be interested in you if you have nothing to offer but the fact you want to be important? I'm not singling out LaQuan Smith with this, but taking a look here, he is screaming that he wants the moment. You can't have the moment for the sake of having the moment girl. It has to come to you! Then again, maybe NYFW is the moment. Because the moment Fing sucks lol. And I hope I don't sound sanctimonious or moralistic because I know it is hard these days growing up with social media and validation etc. I just want to look forward to fashion week again instead of hating it ugh

This is like a p*rn parody of a major blockbuster film: tacky, low-budget cheapness level, shallow...and the only goal is to grab some cash from the original, while showing as much flesh as possible.

Obviously very Tom Ford but as a firm fan of Tom Ford, I always feel compelled to like a LaQuan Smith collection and this is no exception (including the casting of Julia Fox). I'm a sucker for some tacky OTT glamour. Always have been - always will.

Am always nervous about his minis, they keep riding higher every year

Isn’t it kind of weird that we always associate Tom Ford with a kind of very sexy fashion when in fact, his women are always clothed? It’s always louche, but it’s always in the details. It’s always on the border of vulgarity but it’s done with humor.

Here it’s very 1st degree in a way. There’s not a lot of balance. I can appreciate it for the same reasons as you but in terms of inventivity or quality, there’s a hunger for more.

This makes me think of Dsquared2 in a way. They started very eurotrash and at one point evolved into something much more sophisticated. And I remember them saying that their environnement changed (they started to attend galas, more formal ceremonies when before it was all about partying). And I wonder if Laquan will be able to do both. His woman, the IG woman has a very linear lifestyle it seems…

I wonder how the model, or any one irl walk in that pair of pants? it must be so dangerous :P

Since this is from NY and not Paris, I actually like how trashy this collection is, but if the material (like ithe fur doesn't look like mink or any real fur) and overall execution can be sharper, it will definitely up it many notches above ...
