London Fashion Week S/S 11 Schedule

The British Fashion Council has revealed the London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 schedule. Among the list are several newcomers as well some British designers who will return to London to show their collection.

Giles Deacon, who usually shows in Paris will be making his return to London Fashion Week. He will also be joined by Swedish design house, Acne, who will make their debut showing at London Fashion Week on September 19. In addition, London Fashion Week staples, such as Burberry Prorsum, Matthew Williamson and Pringle of Scotland will also show their collections at Somerset House.

^^ yeh whats with that, for the past two seasons they have shown at Chelsea College, but there has been no gossip on where they are gonna show this season, and for me sadly thats one of the most important factors.

i worked out its at chelsea again (if the pre-show videos are anything to go by it looks the same)

yes the week has got better, i'm however getting more and more frustrated with the bfc though. I wouldn't dream of putting down all the hard work they have done getting some of the really big name brands back, but wandering around somerset house yesterday and taking in all the press from the week, there is just so much crap at lfw. If the BFC took a minute and perhaps the phrase 'less is more' and thought about how they could improve the event, it would be to plow all their efforts and money into making 'lfw' a beacon of glamour, luxury, and innovation, a brand that rivals that of some of the labels that show, or would potentially show in the city. because at the end of the day thats what these biannual events are, a brand which aims to entice international press and buyers.

High Fashion... As in the stuff that garners tens of thousands of views on places like the fashion spot, namely shows such as Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and Burberry thrives on exclusivity, and the hideous amount of rubbish at lfw waters all of that down. I sincerely think the BFC should look at creating an official two tier system with the big money brands and advertisers like Paul Smith and buzz word names like Giles Deacon, dominating an official schedule with far fewer labels showing each day, and the less exciting names like Jasper Conran on a schedule running parallel for the press and buyers that are concerned with that lower brow area of the industry.

On the whole though the event is heading in the right direction, next season Tom Ford is moving his label to London, Aquascutum will be showing on schedule again, and rumor has it Mulberry will start doing big proper shows. I can only hope they manage to entice a few other labels back like Preen to build on this momentum and build a good solid foundation for the return of our biggest stars like Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and maybe even John Galliano. How exciting would that be?

I think the rubbish is sometimes the price we pay for innovation, sometimes designers get it right, sometimes they don't. But I guess what you're saying, and what I agree with, is that London needs a solid bedrock of reliably-good designers that you can rely on. The price we'd pay then for the more 'indie' designers would be less.

The last couple of days have been great for me, there's been Kinder Agguigini, Amanda Wakeley, today there was Burberry, I liked quite a few others, too, but to have pretty much nothing for the first two days I can't deny is disappointing.

Precisely. But what is so infuriating is the British Fashion Council glorify it, they keep banging on about all this undiscovered talent and how we're a hot bed for creativity - which we are but they don't understand how we are so. We're a 'hotbed of creativity' in the sense that we produce two great designers each decade one avant garde and another more commercial, think 70's Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith, 80's John Galliano and Antonio Berardi and 90's Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, 00's Gareth Pugh and Christopher Kane.

These designers unlike other cities for example Paris who has really been unable to produce a designer brand since Jean Paul Gaultier can go on and stand alone with their own brands. The rest although I dare say is slightly more imaginative than the same sort of things available in other cities is neither cutting edge or exciting and let me say that when a figure such as Harold Tilman keeps banging on about all this creativity and then press and buyers come to find its a couple of rooms filled with desperately uninspiring designs somewhere on the Thames in London, it comes as somewhat of an anticlimax.

Ohh to be the chairman of the BFC. Things would be a lot to different I tell you.
