Long Awaited Sunscreen Now Approved in US

This is great news! Mexoryl is the only known effective way of blocking UVA rays (the main cause of skin damage, aging and cancer), but until now it wasn't approved in the US so you had to get it overseas. Most people don't realize that the sunscreens sold in the US are virtually useless. I'm excited because this means I don't have to spend a fortune on imported sunscreen anymore.

EDIT: Actually, now that I reread the article, it's only SX, not XL, which is less effective so I'll probably stick with the stronger stuff for the time being. At least it's a step in the right direction.

I order it from Spain on ebay (user wasabina). That's the cheapest and fastest way I've found. The Fluide Extreme is good for the face because it's very light, and the Lait or Dermo is good for around the eyes because it's a bit thicker and doesn't sweat off.

Strange that Mexoryl got only approved now! It has been used in Europe, Japan and so for ~10 years, and I thought this was the standard substance now with millions of people having used it!

But the main difference between the chemical filter Mexoryl SX and XL is, as far as I know, not the strength, but the time it is effective. SX lasts ~1 hour, and XL over 3 hours. So if you just repeat the application after 1 hour, you should get the same effect. But it is not very practical, thats for sure...

Sorry, but I'm not sure what Mexoryl in fact is...?
I really need to use sunscreen every day, and so I'm always interested in new information and products.
At the moment I use La Roche Posay SPF 40, but have considered changing to something a little more "matte" if I can find it. Also considering Dr. Hauschka sunscreens, I'm pretty sure they have a mineral filter.

So is Mexoryl an actual brand that makes sunscreen, or is it a component of sunscreens, or...?

Yes, Tott is right, it is chemical sunscreen component.

Mexoryl converts the UV rays into heat (this doesn´t mean that you will get warm wearing it).
The mineral sunscreen is physical sunscreen, tiny particles reflect the UV rays so they don't get into your skin.

In general, sunscreen works best if it has the physical and the chemical component.

La Roche Posay is about the best sunscreen you can get. It is the company that sells sunscreen with Mexoryl, I'm pretty sure if you wear SPF 40 it is in it. Do you use Hydraphase XL? It contains Mexoryl XL.
There is also La Roche Posay Moisturizer with UVA/ UVB filter. It is really good.

Whatever you get, it is important to have good UVA filter because UVA lets the skin age, and you will only see the damage it did in some years from now. UVB filter makes sure you don't get a sunburn (which would also damage the skin), but you see the result right away.
