luke is an old friend of mine from california who is currently living in los angeles and getting major artistic representation and recognition. his work could be considered "emo" but i am drawn to the dark colors/subject matter and the ridiculous cuteness of the images...they're very sinister, but so cute that it's hard not to love them..that juxtaposition is very strong, and he's very good at it.

here are a few to get you started...i love their minimalism with color and negative space, as well as that they're SO CUTE!!

I absolutely agree with the things you said. I love this  Especially how he paints (not digital? I hope) the backgrounds, I don't know how you call that technique, it creates a nice gloomy mood.

Jeesh .F you have met such talented people.

of course perle...they're not digital at all...which i'm super happy about. they're made usually using acrylic and ink on canvases that, if i remember correctly, were pretty big...whenever i'd go over to his house i'd be fawning over them...i should have just bought some when i had the chance  never really think about it at the time though do you? i do NOW though

emi, i like the dj one too and i feel so bad about the record!

thanks .f for sharing.
it's interesting because exactly this juxtaposition has become very much a trend (not in a bad sense) .... i saw some similar ideas at the biennale, too... i think it is something that has been inspired by contemporary japanese art?

the use of negative space is indeed very nice, i like the dj best out of those, too.

very very much so...i would say some nascent influences are probably nara (one of my favorites!) and murakami (whom i'm not the biggest fan of) among others...they have a very cartoon-like quality...not least because of the subjects (animals or anime characters) but also the graphic painting style...it's not painterly in any sense, but very stark, easy-to-see shapes and colors.

agree on nara and murakami. i'm not really a fan of murakami's work either but i really like the exhibitions and books he curated, he definitely is someone who helped shaping the whole 'movement' with his theories.

I love this! I know this is a pretty old thread, but I just had to comment on these cute paintings! :D

we used to be friends - we both lived in the same tiny town in california - but i haven't spoken to him in a few years. i'm on his mailing list though so i know he's been up to no good  are you familiar with his work?

I love these, specially the color + backgrounds, thanks so much for posting them.
