Lula #17 Fall / Winter 2013 / 2014 : Zoe Kazan

I used to love this magazines and the covers, editorials they produced. But their work does not include much innovation and is repetetive. That being said this looks like it will be a quite cute cover once we see a higher quality version, I tend to like 60s inspirations.

I like the layout and styling but not Zoe as the cover subject.

This has never been one of my favorite magazines - :o - but I do like Zoe Kazan alot, so I may pick this up.

This cover is sort of strange, I mean love the styling and atmosphere, but there's something unflattering.

The last couple issues of Lula have has had a lot of misses. I feel like while the older issues were still ultra girly and sweet, there was always a new, edgy interpretation of those words eg the Lolita cover, Ali Michael's Black Magick issue. Now it feels like there's no innovation.

That being said, I never thought of Lula as "monotonous." Personally, every magazine is monotonous in the same way Lula is,because it has its own special signatures and whatnot.I guess the first issues of Lula just really set the bar to high  but it only comes out 2x year, so for me, I'm still in love.

Some sad news for longtime Lula readers....

Dear loveliest lula readers,
Thank you for your loyalty and enthusiasm and love over these past 8 years. Thank you for being happy for your car to break down on the motorway for 3 hours because you had lula time uninterrupted. Thank you for naming your daughter lula. Your dog Lula. Thank you for buying champagne or macaroons or having a bubble bath when you read a new issue (more of you do these things than you can possibly imagine!) Thank you for your letters and your drawings and your gifts. Thank you for approaching me (at the airport, on the airplane, on the street, at the check out counter, at a Joanna newsom concert…) to say hello. Thank you for enjoying it so much. Issue seventeen is my last. It’s time. Lula has been changing, as I have been changing, and I don’t want her to change too much! I want her to stay as she is. And me, i want to say goodbye now when it’s all going so amazingly well. When it’s joyful.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure. And I hope you will join me for my next one: Violet will launch spring 2014.
With love and so much thanks,
Leith

I've loved Lula magazine for a long time but I'm glad to hear that Leith has a new project up her sleeves. Will have to keep an eye for Violet. Going to place my order for issue seventeen now since I don't want to miss out on one more bit of Lula joy.

That issue with Chanel Iman was one of my favorites, so sad to see this is the last one. But that shows true courage to know when to pull the plug on something you've been doing for such a long time.

What will actually differentiate the style of Lula compared to Violet, they both have soft names and the style of Leith Clark is something that I can't see changing drastically so why create something new? I understand Lula was losing its impact and becoming very monotonous (I flicked through this issue and definitely didn't feel it was worth the price) so maybe the something new may lure readers back in?

As for the cover it isn't anything groundbreaking, pretty? yes but nothing new. The contents are unforgettable as I only flicked through quickly but it was something that you could have confused with past issues of Lula quite easily. However, knowing it will be the last issue may make me purchase it even though everything I've said has been negative there is a sort of novelty of owning the last ever issue that will be created.

Wow, I'm surprised that the Lula era is coming to an end.

I think what's so great about Lula, is that it has a very particular perspective and mood that hasn't really been represented by any other publication - and that a lot of women seem to crave.
