I disagree, plenty of great actors have put their names to Star Wars films without receiving hate for it - Natalie Portman, Christopher Lee etc.
They're good fun and it'll be a change to see her in a role that's (hopefully) less intense than 12 Years. In any case, Non-Stop was a way more questionable role choice.

Those people are snobs who know nothing about how the film industry works. I think for an actress starting out, it's a smart decision to take a role in a film of this magnitude. I'd hate to bring race in this (inevitable), but it's also particularly smart for a black actress to take a role in such a film because opportunities like this don't happen often. It's not impossible for her to balance blockbuster roles (Star Wars and The Jungle Book) with some indies (Southpaw and Americanah). Good for her.

And let's not forget, even though her acting wasn't so good, it did keep Natalie Portman's name in the industry for a number of years.

And look at the rest of the cast! Full of credible actors including Oscar Isaac, Domnhall Gleeson and Max von Sydow. It's a damn good cast. And the film is in safe hands with J.J. Abrams.

Star Wars is not just some random, generic blockbuster. She already proved to be a talented actress, now with this she'll be properly shot to stardom and worldwide exposure. I think it it's a brilliant move for both the movie and her.

I'm personally hoping she's a villain, something really wicked like Asajj Ventress meets Darth Maul.

I have mixed feelings about this. One one hand, it's a film role and it's part of an iconic franchise. On the other hand, JJ Abrams managed to reduce women to window dressing in the Star Trek films, so I'm wary. Granted he does actually love SW and he did cocreate Alias, but the jury's out.

At any rate, we'll get lots of awesome red carpet looks when the time arrives. Plus, her character will probably get fab costumes too.
