He doesn't fluctuate, that's what makes him respectable. While the rest are butting heads 24/7, humiliating themselves with their musical chairs while licking corporate boots, this one's literally whistling and even narrating his way into whatever he enjoys the most out of making clothes, and you can tell he truly has the time of his life building things, changing his mind, rebuilding, asking himself questions regardless of whether someone has asked them before or not, looking at materials and playing with them. I'm sure that if he was interested in relevancy, given the platform he still maintains (just the ability to show, a luxury that's rare for independent designers these days), he would've done the necessary gimmicks long ago.
I don't always like what he does (like this season), and some seasons I'm just not in the mood for his aesthetic, but I admire that he clearly does whatever he wants in a tough industry that is increasingly less tolerant for that, and doesn't succumb to any 'spirit of the times'.. he's as independent as they come. How is it all viable? no idea but I'm sure it's not rocket science to find a way to make it work while loving yourself enough to treasure and not end up hating the thing you love the most.. and... much love for that.
He had revealed the sketches for this collection weeks in advance and I loved how focused it seemed; Now seeing the real garments, I'm maybe not as much of a fan of the construction in the taffeta pieces but his denim still has no match.
I'm still a supporter of him, for the same reasons that @MulletProof stated but it frustrates that we didn't get to see his DelPozo, which was an opportunity for him to explore more elaborate techniques and give in to his more fantastic impulses. Maybe some day...
I always find his Shows a little underwhelming, and it's the same here, but looking at the pictures there are always pieces that reveal themselves as not as simple (and boring) as I thought.
I used to think that lack of budget was a concern and reason for him not to be able to push things further but I'm not so sure anymore. Like someone said here, he's never really been relevant beyond the people that seem to be buying his clothes, but in the end it might be one reason for his longevity.
I was also hugely disappointed with what he did (or did not do) at Delpozo like @MulletProof said, but he posted some of the planned collection on his IG and explained what happened. It just wasn't the right moment apparently.
Watching him here made me think of what you wrote @MulletProof, and it makes total sense. I don't always like what he does, and it's frustrating that he always seems to be holding back, but there is something to be said about someone who seems to really be enjoying what he's doing.
