Brooklyn duo MGMT continue to charm the pants off festival crowds this summer with their psychedelic dance tunes. But what's up with that new album, Congratulations? By the time it's expected out in 2010, nearly three years will have passed since their debut Oracular Spectacular. Backstage at England's V-Fest this past weekend, singer/guitarist Andrew VanWyngarden explained the delay to NME.
"We set up to do it really fast originally and then we realized that we don't really work fast," VanWyngarden said. "It takes awhile.... We have music for ten songs right now and four of them have vocals on them… the demos are definitely in a much better-sounding state than they were when we went up to [the studio] last time."
VanWyngarden added that several of the band's new tunes were generated on the road. "A couple of the songs were going through my head while we were touring, so they're kind of tour-inspired songs," he said. "Some of them are just Ben [Goldwasser] and I sitting down in a room and coming up with something. It feels really natural. We're actually in the mood now to write more."
MGMT debuted a pair of songs during their late-night set at Bonnaroo in June -- an untitled piano-led track that recalled the bright psychedelia and flowing arrangements of the Zombies' The Odyssey and the Oracle, and the album's title track "Congratulations," a more standard MGMT fare (catchy synths, sing-along vocals).
Peter Kember, a.ka. Sonic Boom, formerly of shoegaze pioneers Spaceman 3, is handling production duties on the new album, working with the duo at studios in Upstate, NY, and Malibu, CA. "[He's] made some of my favorite music," said VanWyngarden. "He meshes well with the group." Mercury Rev / Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann will mix the album, said VanWyngarden. MGMT and Sasha Pivovarova in Vogue US January 2010!

Ever wonder what was on Steven Meisel’s iPod? The latest issue of Vogue gives us a little hint, its ‘Already Famous’ editorial features a lineup fit for Coachella posing alongside supermodel, Sasha Pivovarova. Musicians Mika, Beirut, Vampire Weekend, The Horrors, Chester French and MGMT, join Sasha for a little fashionable fun in this lighthearted story. While we can’t exactly imagine Anna Wintour jamming to ‘Electric Feel’ it is still cool to see a few rock stars shaking up a studio edit.

MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden says the band's new album 'Congratulations' is partially influenced by Lady GaGa and Kanye West.

The album has been mixed and mastered and is set for release this spring. VanWyngarden said that some songs on it are about the duo's reaction to fame. He admitted that as the band found success they became "the people we were making fun of" on 2007 debut album 'Oracular Spectacular'.

"We were a group of guys in their mid-20s touring around the world and of course we are going to party. But after a while we all learned that you can't just keep doing that over and over, and the new record addresses those issues," VanWyngarden told Spin.com.

"On some of the new songs, I found myself thinking about Lady GaGa or Kanye West, and what their ultimate goal is," he added. "This sounds cheesy, but for us it's really just about the music and getting people to hear what we have to say. I'm sure it's about the music for those people, too… but fame… it's an interesting career."

VanWyngarden also spoke about his love of surfing, which he says is another central theme on 'Congratulations', particularly on the song 'Siberian Breaks'.

"I try to do it [surf] whenever I can. I'm going to Costa Rica to surf this Sunday. I love it and it's definitely a theme on 'Congratulations'. There's one song called 'Siberian Breaks', and it's about 12 minutes long. It's kind of like eight different songs strung together into one, and the general theme is about surfing in the Arctic Circle by Russia."

Recently MGMT told NME.COM that they don't want to release any singles from 'Congratulations'.
