that's a decent definiton but keep in mind that total control isn't the big deal, it's just the consistency of the style. a lot of older hollywood fillmakers who had to go through a lot of corporate crap (films were seen as products, not art; production line stile film making) were/are definitely auteurs. it's all about having your own thing, and not being a shark biter.

a designer wouldnt be worth the money if he/she were just biting, that defeats the purpose

    oh snap

it's more to do with an auteur being driven by his own idiosyncratic ideas.

    ^That makes more sense
    Self-driven...
    And your example is great

    How about this one?

    Here's something from another thread...
I also kind of got the impression Prada was about counter-fashion, especially the time the clothing side of the company started. It was all black and serious when everybody was in colour... Something like this I remember reading.

This thread is useless because the originator of this has NOT even come up with an example. What is the point?????

So why don't you post some examples of what you feel is biting?

Question ... what do you feel is the distinction between biting and riffing?

    Here's an example of riffing:

    Prada SS 05

    Marc Jacobs AW 05

hmmm...that's not biting in my opinion. i dont know which predates the other, but there is definitely enough of a difference for it not to qualify for biter status. definitely not shark status.

That's my point ... this is riffing. Where's the line?

(If you look at my captions, Marc was riffing on Prada one season later.)

In my opinion Calvin Klein always looked similar to Jil Sander.

why do I feel like this thread is going to be dead soon....
i think it's too vague in its conception....
abaybay...it would be nice for you to post some examples of what you are referring to. :)
you have a couple of people who are attempting to support you in this thread...but you haven't spoken up (as far as posting proof of your question)....

...usually a thread is started to evoke a discussion on a topic that has some meaning to the starter, thus provoking an exchanging of ideas...therefore one would assume that you'd have something of interest to say, so why don't you kill the attitude? people were just trying to help you out

    so lame.

its a known thing that everybody inspires themselves from fellow or not so fellow designers.

its a known thing that everything is been done before, and what's new and now is just the different ways the designer will approach these revisited ideas and incorporate them in a new fresh way.

    sorry.
