Hemlines mostly fell somewhere between mini and microscopic on Marc Jacobs’ abbreviated dresses. They came in colorful sequins, ruched satin and sheer netted black guipure, almost all styled with sheer black stockings and festive footwear — sequined python scrunched boots, anyone? At the risk of stating the obvious, “It’s a party,” is how Joseph Carter, Marc Jacobs’ head of women’s design, described the lineup. “It’s punchy, something a little gaudy.” Gaudy in a good way, such as the halter dress with a giant bejeweled choker neckline, and the black-and-white “bunny fur” jacket with a bow. There were notes of Sixties swing, Seventies Saint Laurent and Eighties party punk, all united by Jacobs’ witty attitude of girly irreverence.

I feel like we have already seen a lot of this on the SLP runways in the last few seasons. It's also still very MJ. So that's positive. However, a lot of this looks so suffocating? I can't really explain why it feels that way to me, maybe because it looks like the clothes don't move? Very weird. Nothing remarkable about this collection, despite the few cute mini dresses towards the end.

Hmm..Is it me or did Marc just pay homage to Slimane's Saint Laurent with this collection?

Nice. I love the first looks, the prints are beautiful. They remind me of the printed suits Nicolas made for Vuitton

I strangely enjoy this a lot more than anything he's put out in a while (I can't recall loving a collection of his since fall 2007)

a bit saint laurent..

i only like the mini red velvet dress

I definitely agree, very SLP meets the old MBMJ formula. I think the pictures seem so stiff and lifeless because of the weird close-up plus the depressing lighting...

Some of the cuts on the dresses remind me of Dolce & Gabbana.

Marc Jacobs has your next New Year's Eve dress all sorted. His Resort collection, which was presented outside the showroom for the first time in an Upper East Side town house, was devoted almost exclusively to party clothes. Dolly bird minidresses in black guipure lace, jewel-toned crushed velvet, or leopard-printed sequins worn with sheer black hose and strappy heels or slouchy go-go boots formed the crux of the lineup. "People getting dressed up, going out. Happy, lively," offered Jacobs' design director, Joseph Carter, when he was asked for a few words backstage.

The design team explored some of the same territory here that Hedi Slimane has at Saint Laurent in recent seasons. But Jacobs has long had an affection for the 1960s, as a backward glance at his Fall show reminds us. This collection will have a more straightforward appeal for customers than that one did, precisely because of how mood-elevating minidresses and sparkle can be. (Despite Jessica Lange's insistence that "Happy Days Are Here Again" back in February, that show resonated darkly.)

Carter and co. nodded in the direction of more casual occasions with a red sweatshirt embroidered with crystal stars on the chest (the descendant of MJ's popular Coca-Cola sweatshirt for Spring ’14) and a crinkle leather mini. But it wasn't all leggy all the time. There was a pantsuit in acid-bright abstract floral silk chiné, and one of the best looks in the show was a pair of skinny sequined black guipure flares topped by a white rabbit fur jacket complete with a built-in bow.

Am I the only one thinking YM magazine and Gossip Girl?

I'm sorry but this collection looks dated and very 'high school dance' to me, circa 1998 - 2006.

This is what Marc Jacobs's true aesthetic is, and while I should be hating most of it as it looks kinda dated in today's terms, I am glad he is taking the brand back to old territory. Then again, fashion is reinvention and I think it's time for designers to take a step towards glitter and gimmick while leaving most of the clean minimalism behind.

While I agree that it's derivative of Saint Laurent I think it's actually better than Saint Laurent, this is what Hedi should be doing but isn't quite achieving.

'i feel like i've seen this look before' is the only thing that came to mind while looking at the outfits. it's not completely ugly, but it looks like it wouldn't look out of place in a lookbook from 10 years ago. feels dated and uninteresting
