Marilyn meets Maria Callas....

From the infamous "birthday" night of May 1962:

"Marilyn Monroe lip print May, 1962", taken by Robert Champion backstage at the "New York's Birthday Salute to President Kennedy". On page 132, Chapter 37, titled "Marilyn Monroe", of the unpublished manuscript memoir "He Made Stars Shine", Robert Freeman Champion writes: "As we stood for a long time back stage at Madison Square Garden, she was very nervous about her appearance. She wore a beautiful gown that was made from a nude like material...designed by Jean-Louis and cost $5,000 dollars...I refreshed her lipcolor, powdered her nose, checked her blusher, and then she was announced again 'Miss Marilyn Monroe, better late than never.' In her very tight gown, she had difficulty ascending the make-shift stairs and I assisted her to the top where the spotlight hit her. The next is history of Miss Monroe seductively walking out to the microphone and singing 'Happy Birthday, Mr. President'. Later, as I mentioned I introduced her to Maria Callas. Later, Miss Monroe went to the same party as Miss Callas and they met there again."

Attached are photos of Marilyn and Maria, and the lip print from the above described lipcolor refreshing (I don't remember seeing any color photos from this night, so it's lovely to see the lip color she wore when she sang Happy Birthday to Kennedy).

Did she have blue or brown eyes ? I've seen tons of pics, dozens of her films and I still don't know.
Sometimes her eyes are blue sometimes they're brown. Did colored contacts exist in her times ?

Yes, Richard Avedon photographed her. She did a whole session with him where she posed as 5 famous sex symbols.

Marilyn Monroe as Lillian Russell

Marilyn Monroe as Theda Bara

Marilyn Monroe as Clara Bow

Marilyn Monroe as Marlene Dietrich

Marilyn Monroe as Jean Harlow

The transformations are pretty amazing. Marilyn Monroe looks so different in each picture and has embodied each woman very well, in my opinon.

I think her eyes were blue. That's what I've read and from colour pictures her eyes look blue. I don't know if they had colour lenses back in the 1940s and 1950s but even if they did I don't think as a starlet and unknown model she would have had to wear them. Here are a couple of pictures I found when she wasn't a big star and her eyes look blue.

i'm just wondering, what does everyone think of all the recent comparisons of anna nicole smith to marilyn monroe? (this might spark some interesting conversation!) everytime i turn on the TV now I see some sort of comparison between the two. are they in the same league? what do you think?

I can understand why people would compare them. Plus ANS copied Marilyn Monroe so... But really Marilyn is arguably the biggest comtemporary myth. There's very little chance that that could be said in the future about ANS. Even in her lifetime she was a D lister. She'll be remember as that infamous playmate who married a millionaire and all her scandals. Marilyn was a real star and though her tragic death has played a part in her 'mythication' (is that a word ? sorry I'm french) she left a big legacy behind her. Lots of people , me included, still enjoy her films, songs and pictures.Unlike ANS, her talent stands alone IMO.
