thrift store........like most of her stuff. (apart from the balenciaga!) :P

i like it.. it's cute and most likely, like said above, a thrift store or vintage find

try ebay ...

but if you really want to make one yourself.. It's just a cotton sack... with stuff painted on the front.

DIY.

All you need is a decent fabric.. a heavy cotton or a canvas and some fabric paint or whatever. Don't get a lightweight material.. otherwise your bag will not last long

Materials:
Canvas/Cotton
A light lining material (if you want to line it)
Sewing machine
Thread
Pins or Rubber Cement
Scissors
Pencil

I'll give you a step by step so that you can sew your own at home:

1- take your canvas and draw lightly in pencil a shape that resembles my attached image. Make sure the shape is large enough. Remember that half of this shape will be the actual size of your bag.

2 - cut out this shape and fold along the center where i drew the lovely little arrow.. make sure you fold the fabric so that the right sides are facing each other.. you will turn the bag inside out after you sew it.. much like a pillow.

3 - sew from your fold up the curved sides... making sure you sew extra well towards the fold of your fabric(the bottom) Just backtack on your sewing machine.. or hit reverse a couple of times.

4 - once you sew both of your sides.. your bag should look something like my second attachment (I know they're very rough drawings, it's 1am and i'm doing them in MS paint. lol)

5 - Now, you must address what you are doing for a handle. To continue with the slouchy look, i'd suggest cutting out a rectangular piece of fabric folding it right side facing each other.. and sew along where the fabric meets... and turning it inside out so that the right side of your fabric is facing out, like a pillow.

6 - Now you will take pins and pin the top edges of your bag, fold the fabric down like 1/2 an inch. there should be tons of room to do this. (a good alternative to pins is rubber cement, which i use all the time instead of pinning... it's way easier, if you choose to use rubber cement, make sure you cement bot sides for them to stick.. so everywhere i say to pin something, you can rubber cement it if you want)

7 - take the "handle" you've made and pin that to the appropriate place as well

8 - now if you want to line it, you can.. if you don't you don't have to, but I just think it looks a lot nicer... if you dont want to line it, just sew along the top edge of your bag, making sure to include the handle when you sew so that ita ll stays together and poof, you've got your bag.

9 - now if you want to line it.. cut out a similarly shaped pattern (out of your lightweight fabric) like my first attachment and follow instructions 1-3... if you want your lining to have a better fit.. make your lining fabric a tiny bit smaller than what you cut for your outer materials.

10 - Sew it just as you did in previous steps... fold the top edge of your lining material(The same way you did for the outside) so that the bad part faces the inside of your bag. If you are paying attention, you'll know what looks right and how to fold it properly. Pin your lining inside making sure to include your handle in BETWEEN your lining and your outer material... and sew... and yea.. you're done.

I know they're a bit complex, but i assure you, it's very easy.

It could be much easier if you just wanted a plain flat tote.. but that is not what MK's white bag is...

This pattern should give you the nice sling shape, if you make your handle long enough. Make sure you measure your body with a tape measure to see how long you want your handle.

Luna... thank you so much. That was so kind of you. ~Cait :flower:

thanks luna!!! i will forward these instructions to my best friend
we were considering making our own bag, but was unsure where we'd find the right materials in san francisco...will go hunting for it, should be a fun project!

but one thing...i can't draw for beans, hahahahaa....

THANKS AGAIN!!!

No problem Jen and Cait.

Jen.. you only need a canvas-like material... that should be fairly easy to find.

oh my goodness, i was reading through the instructions, and this will be quite a project, hahaha...we're going to start on it after our semester is over. our "winter project" as she calls it. it will be fun!

do you make a lot of your own bags and clothes?

is there anywhere you would recommend for us to get the necessary fabric/accessories/tools?

thanks again, you rock!

I only make bags and small accessories... and an occasional shoe.. but I hate making shoes... I stick to easy ones like sandals.

For reccommendations on where to go.. it all depends on where you live.

Oh, I just read up that you live in San Fran. There's gotta be tons of fabric stores there... But I dont really know what's in Cali.. I've never been west past PA.

Stores that I usually go to when I'm at home and desperate are Ragshop, AC Moore, Joann's fabrics...

When i'm in the city, I'm spoiled.. I can go anywhere and get anything.

Does anyone know where I could get a decent sewing machine for cheap?

Luna that was so awsome of you!!! :flower:

Now I feel like I need to make my own bag... humm...

Luna thanks for the instructions!

I really feel inspired to make one! :flower: :woot:
