Matty Bovan F/W 2022.23 London

Hilarious! This can't be serious? I'm seeing three/four/five different design aesthetics packed into one single look. I see Vivienne Westwood, Raf Simons, Jeremy Scott, Simone Rocha, Viktor&Rolf, just for a start. A little of the Commes des Garçons spirit too.

Is this seriously the talent coming out of Central Saint Martins these days? LOL. He worked with Nicolas Ghesquiere at Louis Vuitton, what?! In which aspect?

FFS.

I feel like all these young designers from London don't know anything about actual design. It seems like they've spent waaaaaay, waaaaay, waaayyyytoo much time studying their favorite designers on YouTube & Tumblr, and not nearly enough time studying, you know, themselves.

Luckily, if anything, LFW has taught us that these designers will be gone before we know it, so let’s keep the faith.

Once again, no.

Designers of this ilk are what makes me infuriated with many fashion lecturers. This is like crack to them. Many of them love fashion that seriously tries to not take itself too seriously because it's about the attitude and the space but lacking any real design or genuine POV. Fashion IS art rather than fashion and art.

It's too self serious and lacking. Bovan is a designer that takes themselves way too seriously but never the work, when it should be the other way around. There's no tension or passion coming from these clothes. The likes of McQueen was able to have this personality/aura around him because he had true design talent and skills to back it up and a willingness to be vulnerable without it being performative. This is a manic fashion hound that went to a dead-stock fabric wholesaler with a mannequin, a bag of old clothes and a stable gun. No true experimentation, nothing sensual or alluring.
