I think a couple of seasons ago she was poised to become #1, she was top 5 and Daria was fading herself out and Gemma was looking towards other things.. and then BAM. she dyed her hair blonde, cut it and dissapeared for a while

Backing to the top 5 (via archive.org), Mariacarla never reached a place there!
Few models were capable to take the place of other model from the top 5, recetly 2 models took Caroline's place from the top 5 : Anja & Coco.

I once asked a producer friend of mine about models.com, and he told me two things that I think all the time when I see the rank. First thing is that the rankings is influenced by photographers, desginers, magazines, etc. THEY make the rankings so the models they like will always be there (a obvious example is Flávia, why do you think she's still there ? Because Pilati loves her !), the other thing he said is about the MDC Icons list (your 'doubt'), that list is made for two type of models, the first type is that model that's not considered a model anymore (from some points of view), that's considered a celebrity (like Gisele, Evangelista, Moss ...) another type of model is that that changed something in the fashion world (Moss - introduced the heroin chic models, Gisele - introduced models that were sexy, widing up w/ the heroin chic models ...),, so now answering your question, Mariacarla didn't change anything, I know she's very successful but she's not the kind of model that will turn into a 'fashion icon'.

Lyia, as much as I know about her, she was the first black model to reach the 1st spot, and that made her very famous, some friends of mine that live in South Africa said that she was in every news, newspaper, and she's always in partys and events, and if you see some mags like Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, they're always referring to her clothes, making her a kind of fashion icon (she was on the best dressed list of Vanity Fair US Sep. 2007), this is all my knowledge about her ...
