Backstage Beauty: Proenza Schouler’s Dark Impulses
Backstage at Proenza Schouler last night, model Melissa Stasiuk checked her text messages and took in the scene—oblivious to the stir she was causing before showtime. As an exclusive booking for designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s fall show, it was her dark brown hair and pale skin that had captured their attention. “There was something about the purity of it,” said the hairstylist Paul Hanlon of her distinctive “Patti Smith”–esque beauty, which only heightened the minimalist appeal of the pristine white honeycomb wrap dress and kimono jacket she wore down the runway. Inspired, Hanlon’s team took models Lida Fox, Kel Markey, and Maria Bradley to a slightly darker shade of espresso, too, enlisting the services of Frédéric Fekkai colorists Ben Gregory and Mari Ohashi, who dyed their hair the day before the show at the company’s SoHo salon.
Once they'd been transformed, Hanlon had to do little more than wash their hair with Fekkai’s Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo. “It’s a really natural look. Not too refined, not too perfect,” he said, twisting the length of a model’s hair with his hands and misting it with a spritz of Fekkai’s Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray for just a hint of rumpled texture. “Because, ultimately, it’s really not about the hair,” he added, summing up the mood. “It’s about the girl—and that, you know, is very Proenza Schouler.”

Rather than the new afreja, I see her as the new Tati. There always seems to be a buzz around these cool Argentinean girls from season to season.
