Men In Skirts

Society will say "unacceptable," but fashion will say "perfectly fine." The fellow in Post #500's picture is CERTAINLY brave- a cropped top AND a denim mini skirt? On a homme? I don't know too many of us hommes who would dare wear a short skirt or a short dress. But if one guy wants to show it's possible, this one surely did it. Is this a hiked-up skirt or is this a proper high-waist mini skirt (which I've never understood at all)? Either way, what a brave fellow. Bravery and confidence are key elements of almost any fashion.

^Brave? Maybe. Very silly looking? Absolutely. There likely is a way for an average guy to wear a skirt without looking like a clown, but the majority of those who attempt it look awkward at best and absurd at worst. I'll have to say no to this concept.

^There are more ways. Look here:

Just some examples from newmalefashion.blogspot.de.

Of course there are some outfits I would not wear by myself. But e.g. this one I would wear nearly all time.

^It actually works pretty well on the first guy. I think the long-ish coat really helps.

I saw once a guy wearing the whole white look and it is quite decent. after all, the black dress is so often to see.
almost half of my male pals have worn it before, some wear it as their everyday look.

I love wearing my sarong (skirt ?) in summer ... Once or twice, I wore it with a white shirt and a blazer, in winter ... One person told me it was chic. But I've never tried a real skirt yet ...
But sincerely, people looked at me weird on streets this summer ... Only the Indian taxi driver thought it was cool... Ahhahah ... "every body wears them in my country, sir ! This is so comfortable ..."

Sarong as alternative to a skirt may look pretty appealing on men.

It struck me! I can try to exploit the idea of males in sarongs. Daring and ultra-fashionable men will catch it.

sarongs are absolutely sexy on men

but sarongs are not skirts, not at all
so we are going off topic :D

I love a beautifully cut skirt on a handsome man. It's got to be mid-long though, other lengths just look silly I think. The guy in post 497 really pulls it off (but that cap looks disgusting), and of course Marc Jacobs does too.
This thread started in 2003, I personally have never spotted a man in skirt on the street. Granted, I don't live in a very fashion forward city, but...

I saw a video earlier this week or last week about trying to make skirts more fashionable for men. Whether you love or loathe the idea of men in skirts, you have to be at least somewhat convinced how skirts for men have been perfectly acceptable... except in modern times. This alone makes you wonder why skirts for men aren't considered more acceptable in this day and age than in the past. Part of me believes that social perception is mostly to blame as to why more males aren't wearing skirts. Either that, or skirts are somehow mutually exclusive to femmes.

I still would mostly stick to long skirts if I were to wear one. Or considering my usual wardrobe when out and about, long jean skirts would be what I would wear. I would need some skirts that are functional. So they'd have to have pockets and be durable. Something like a maxi skirt that lacks pockets may not be to my liking unless I carry around some sort of handbag or something with a pocketless skirt.

regardless gender ID pocketless skirts are a pain for everyone
and short skirts are nice only over trousers

Some days ago I found this report on a geran man wearing skirts just because his son wanted to do so....

I will say that only certain hommes can properly look great in a skirt. The real challenge is in trying to make skirts somehow stylish and appealing for males. What designer(s) or model(s) will make the best push towards making skirts for men reality, and can this actually materialize into something stylish for men whether casual (or even classy/formal)? I just think there are too many hurdles to clear for men's skirts to become reality as well as for them to be better accepted among males. Of course, it doesn't mean that trying is worthless...

That's a great picture in Post #518. Wonderful outfit on him.

As far as high-fashion goes, I've always thought Gaultier does it best, since men in skirts has been part of his repertoire since day one. But, lets show respect where respect is due.

Here's one of Yohji's recent offerings, from his FW13 collection. Get rid of the mustache, maybe the purple knit (weather permitting), and you can easily wear it, as is, on the street..courtesy of our friends at style.com
