    Thanks for the articles Kit.

I was thinking exactly what the 2nd article said while I was reading the first. There used to be a store here that people compared to mine that would drive me mad. Their price point was about half and their clothes looked SO NASTY! Cheap menswear is just BAD all around.

Being a young British man myself I don't relate at all to either article...I've never seen anyone wear a nice suit to the Oscars and I certainly wouldn't consider myself fashionable if I were taking tips from the Guardian.

Why British men are spending more on fashion is a pretty complicated issue I guess and there's a lot more to it than celebrities I imagine. Perhaps changing social conditions (i.e. women's lib) have made men more liberated as regards dress?

Read - 'If you want to look like as much of a YUPPY as Charlie please wear striped shirts'.

Sadly my command of the English language failed me: I read the entire article twice over and I still haven't a clue what he was harping on about...

    :(

    Thoughts on closer inspection:

Hadley Freeman, I'm sure she writes for Vogue too, and Jess Cartner-Morley seem quite sensible compared to Charlie and Gareth but Hadley still doesn't seem to have much perspective on this issue. Hadley's personal taste seems almost as preppy/yuppy as Charlie's from her ten tips.

Also...'Burton' :o :o :o No wonder Hadley thinks that menswear is bad quality if she shops at these truly dire shops. It is my estimation that Burton, Austin Reed, Ciro Citterio etc i.e. 'middle-of-the-range' stores make the worst suits imaginable. If you want cheap go to Marks & Sparks and buy one of those nice navy blue jobs by Timothy Everest.
