I need to buy a dressy-ish shoe- but it owul dbe nice if i could wear it casually at times also. who should i be looking at in terms of style and quality? (and price)

Hugo boss makes excellent quality shoes at varied price points. Personally, my fav shoes are a pair of wingtips by Hugo in brown. Dress them down with a straight leg dark jean, or up with trousers. I usually don't like it when people put a casual outfit together with black shoes though, it's okay and pull offable, but for me black is too formal for jeans. Spend some money on a good quality shoe, because if you choose a classic it will last you a long time. And make sure you use a wooden, unlaquered shoe tree!

Premaita stuff is pretty nice.
Madeinmarche as well.
They run around $600+ I believe.

Don't you think Silvano Lattanzi is a bit high for something basic as he is asking for?

I love their shoes but for most spending $1900+ is perhaps something not in inclination. Zintala is the company that owns Lattanzi.

Berluti is sublime.

Gucci, and Sergio Rossi are rather applicable choices. Hugo is cheap.

I've got an incessant need to purchase new footwear every two months or so. It may be an addiction, though I haven't gotten to the point where I'm selling my *** on the street to perpetuate my spending habits.

Anyhow, in September I picked up a pair of Patrick Cox chelsea boots at this amazing shoe store called Gravity Pope (www.gravitypope.com) where I live. They carry exclusive makes and models of shoes from some better known, as well as obscure shoe companies.

Anyway, they'd probably be somewhere in your alley, although I find it difficult to wear them with dress pants that aren't boot cut, so beware. They cost about $330 Canadian.

Because I found those so difficult to wear with any dress pants I have, I decided to go out and purchase another pair of slick shoes (which, because they aren't shiny can be worn much more often when going casual) by TO & CO. I haven't been able to find much about this brand, except that I've been told they're a Japanese shoe company that gets it's leathers and shoes made in Italy. Anyway, these babies cost me about $445 Canadian. Too steep?

If you're willing to spend a bit more, you can go for another dressy boot (yet can be worn casually) by the same brand (TO & CO.) for about $475 Canadian.

Check out the site for Gravity Pope (again: www.gravitypope.com); they're selection is huge and what they carry is pretty cool. I'm pretty certain they'll ship anywhere.

Also, keep in mind that those prices are in Canadian dollars and will be nearly split in half when converted to US dollars.

Yes, Lattanzi probably does not fit into the category of basic.
I knew Zintala owned Madeinmarche but didn't know they owned Lattanzi as well, thanks for the info.
Berlutti is great as well - the colored footwear especially!

In that case,
I reccomend Premaita or Madeinmarche more.
I forgot to mention Collection Privee, which would be nice too
but I favor the above brands.
Dries has some nice footwear from time to time and some people like Helmut's a lot, although I don't really care for it.

There are tons of other european/italian labels that make quality shoes too..
Runner mentioned Mantellassi a while back, I don't know much about them but here is a new pic.

My bf always wears shoes from Buddhahood (www.buddhahood.co.uk) as they are "normal" with a twist, meaning they can be worn when he has to be smart thus avoiding the shiny, Gucci-type, "Business man" shoe....

Also, I'd agree with Geek_sheik, To & Co do some nice styles.

yeah, i'm definitely not looking for $600-$1900 shoes.... though if they can be had on ebay at half the price, perhaps (so its good to know what's out there). i've been spending my money on nike trainers for quite awhile now and have decided i need to diversify and have at least one or two pairs of "nicer" shoes. how are jil sander shoes? there's a pair on ebay for $149. i guess my price range would be up to around $350, but i do respect quality enough to pay a bit more. i also have an aversion to shiny, patent leather... and pointed toes (though i have actually never tried them). thanks for the link to the other thread also, should we continue the conversation in the other thread?

Sutor Mantellassi produces a quality shoe. They can be had at Barneys I believe.

Jil Sander had a limited line which was produced in collaboration with Silvano Lattanzi. However the regular line seems to be slightly above Prada quality.

Ultra-pointed toes should be avoided though the toe line to keep in mind is a slight point. Avoid at all costs the square toes.
