has just set off on a book tour to promote her memoir, Becoming, armed with an optimistic message about America’s future and a thoughtfully curated wardrobe. In Chicago yesterday for the first stop on her tour, the former First Lady paid a visit to her alma mater Whitney Young Magnet High School. Dressed in a tailored denim suit by Akris, Obama spoke with 21 lucky female students who were chosen to attend for their leadership skills. The long bright blue jacket and cropped trouser combination made for an arresting visual, particularly paired with silvery heels, and struck just the right balance between polished and casual.

In her memoir, Obama sheds light on her approach to personal style and the care she and stylist, Meredith Koop put into finding the right look for each occasion. She admits to initially viewing the public scrutiny over her wardrobe as a disadvantage—after all, men in the public eye are rarely judged by their fashion choices in the same way. Even still, she managed to turn those negative double standards into a positive, using the attention to shine a light on emerging design talents both at home and abroad.

As a private citizen, Obama hasn’t slowed down one bit and the refined luxury of her Akris pieces were right in line with the sophisticated look she currently favors. For creative director Albert Kriemler, the match between outfit and wearer couldn’t have been better. “Michelle Obama is a confident women with purpose,” he shared. “We were greatly honored to be asked to dress her.”

I was just reading in an interview somewhere (in one of at least 3 magazines  maybe Elle) that she made a point of wearing designers who were kind--to their own people and hers. A bit different than what we've got now, for sure ...

Oh, this must be why she wore the Balenciaga glittery boots, we all know how kind everyone is at Balenciaga :innocent:
Anyway, I might be in the minority but I really don’t like the boots on her. It’s gimmick, something that Cardi B could wear..

Seriously what is even that? Those Balenciaga boots are hideous.
I always get the impression that she tries hard to be fashionable, and most of the times the clothes wear her, not the way around,

I'm sure that she liked the dress but was uncomfortable with how high the wrap would show her legs, and wanted something to wear underneath. She probably should've just not worn the dress, or worn it for something other than this tour. It is beautiful.

^^ She's not an industry inspector ... I'm sure it's based on her own and her team's observations. If they observe or experience nastiness, then that designer gets crossed off the list.

Michelle Obama Put Away Her Thigh-High Balenciaga Boots Last Night and Showed Love For This Emerging Designer

The last time Michelle Obama wore an electric color on stage during her book tour was her now-famous Balenciaga boot moment, when she nearly shut down the Internet after chatting with Sarah Jessica Parker in a yellow dress and a pair of sparkly neon yellow thigh-high boots designed by Demna Gvasalia for the French house. Mrs. Obama’s stylist Meredith Koop has been orchestrating these kinds of monumental and daring designer fashion moments for the former first lady ever since she was in the White House. But Koop has also dressed Obama in younger emerging designers, all of whom were virtually unheard of in the world of politics but whom she believed in and Mrs. O was more than happy to support. Last night during a book tour stop in Texas, Obama shed light on another up-and-comer in the industry named Felicia Noel.

Noel’s New York-based label Fe Noel is all about empowering women, specifically women of color. Her last collection featured a print designed in collaboration with the artist Harmonia Rosales depicting the African goddess Oshun as Venus. The idea was to shift the traditional Eurocentric narrative of Renaissance art and put black women in a place of power and prominence. Noel’s point-of-view as a woman and as a designer falls directly in line with Obama’s expressed beliefs and indeed, what she represents herself. Naturally, Noel was thrilled when Koop reached out to her. According to the designer, the stylist started following Fe Noel on Instagram after Noel’s cousin wrote Koop an email suggesting that she check out the brand. “She contacted us after a few weeks and requested a custom look for Mrs. O’s book tour, one based off of our ‘Liz’ top and rust colored sheer pants,” Noel recalls. “We collaborated with Mrs. O’s personal tailor, who has the former first lady’s exact body replicated in mannequin form.”

The resulting ensemble was a bright orange pair of non-sheer trousers and a matching wrap top with ties on the sleeves and a long train cascading down the back. “This meant so much to my team and my family,” Noel says of the moment Obama walked on stage last night in her design. “In fact, the news traveled so quickly to the small island of Grenada and specifically to my grandmother, the matriarch of our family.”

“I’ve long admired Meredith [Koop] and her ability to push the envelope with Mrs. O’s style. It was a personal goal to see her wear Fe Noel,” she added. “I’m now woven into history at a time when I am and my brand are ‘Becoming’ too!”
