Midcentury Chic: Buggeschou's Updated Modernism

By Godfrey Deeny

If you like mid-century modernism, but want it updated for today's mood, then it's worth taking a look at Buggeschou.

An enterprising young Danish duo composed of Louise Bugge Jacobsen and Daniel Schou, Buggeschou mixes concepts and traditions from Denmark, and a street style and quality French finish to make a novel collection.

This season, Kvadart, the giant Danish label that is one of the world's leading suppliers of interior fabrics, supplied the two designers with sturdy couch cottons, reversed faux suede and flameproof striped curtain materials. The duo used them in snappily cut minis, billowing tops and carefully constructed jackets with Buggeschou's signature slant pockets, in the collection currently being shown in their Marais apartment.

"We try to reflect our Danish heritage, which like our furniture is timeless and modern," explains Schou, who once used cottons salvaged from a sunken merchant ship from WWI.

Buggeschou also used fabrics designed by the world-renowned architect Arne Jacobson (no relation) in summer dresses and in a very chic silver fox bolero with a simple tie. For artier moments, Buggeschou have knitted tops in pale lichen or off-white, made from strips of soft cotton cut with a 1960s trimmer that was handed down to Jacobsen from her mum.

"It's intuitive for me. You never really know the pattern until you have knitted it. It sort of develops its own form," says Jacobsen, who studied architecture at Paris' Ecole des Beaux-Arts, of her hand-knits.

Buggeschou has also just hooked up with Italy's Signoria di Firenze to produce a line of shirts using design from psychedelic design god Verner Panton. Think styles seen in Wallpaper magazine with a twist.

The duo's collection has already been picked up by boutiques in Copenhagen and hip stores in Tokyo like Adelaide and Desperado, and can be seen on their website www.buggeschou.com.

Can something be both timeless and modern?
