Miley Cyrus

In 2013, the main problem with the approach of being "shocking" in your celebrity is that you have to come up with something new every few days, which is why you end up posing like this.

I have no problem with someone experimenting with their look or going through a phase, but the speed with which celebrities now have to keep pushing their profiles forward means they're racing to put out these representations of themselves, probably without reflecting much on it, only pausing to see the stats for hits and units sold.

But no matter how much money you have in the bank, you only have one soul, and no young woman should be standing in front of a camera, signalling that the hole in an empty can is a visual stand-in for her vagina. When you stop to think about it, it's not really looking like fun. But nobody stops to think now, it's all about having something new for people to talk about by the end of this week.

^Well said, and I totally agree. However, you are assuming that others are as intelligent and introspective (or have the capability to be) as you, which sadly, is not the case today. Most people I feel simply don't care. It's all about the dollar.

How does Terry get away with doing this?! It seems celebrities and models are willing to throw away any sort of dignity they have just to be shot by him.

I do agree that celebrities and models are willing to throw away any sort of dignity, but I don't think they're doing it just to be shot by him. I think it's a very calculated move by these celebrities who want to be seen nude and doing inappropriate things and have found a somewhat respectable way of doing it (I use this term very loosely...for reasons that will forever be unknown to me, Terry is still respected in the industry). Before it used to be the Playboy route, but now that takes too long, it's too clean, whatever the reasons. Terry is instant, he's popular, he's shot everyone under the sun. He's the perfect medium to showcase yourself through. They're using him as much as he's using them.

^ yes, they use Terry for publicity and the guise that he's a "fashion photographer" to legitimize their photos as being "artistic." but since those pics are raunchy what is the difference then with modeling for playboy, penthouse our hustler? at least for a hustler model they don't try to pretend they are doing it for "art", it's raunchy and authentic without the guise of passing it off as "art."

This part is particularly true, about only having one soul. I think there is no way you can come out of this kind of behaviour without being majorly f*cked up.

Did you read Sinead O'Connor's (first) open letter to Miley? She summed it up so perfectly and respectfully, I was amazed. Miley's twitter response to her took away all sympathy I might have had for whatever she's going through. She's a repugnant, narcissistic brat.

Miley Cyrus wears all white for her performance on The Today Show on Monday morning (October 7) at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.

FYI: Miley is wearing a Kenzo top, custom shorts, Tuck shoes, and a Celine necklace.

These last pics by Terry are truly disgusting. I just don't know what to think about her anymore.

Terry has never used that stupid, tired and pretentious "art" or "high fashion" excuse for his crassness. He's always been openly, blatantly cheap and low. And maybe it's exactly that type of bluntness that some in fashion, and pop, are so desperate for as a reaction to the refinement, artistry and thoughtfulness because it makes them feel instantly badass.

His gross and pervy aura was interesting and fun for a moment, but a decade later, and he's still doing the same crap he was doing when he started. I don't know if that's an indictment on him, or the people that support him. I think the cheap and throwaway mood and attitude in pop music just seems a perfect match for his style. So he's bigger than ever-- doing the same ol', same ol'. Unfortunately.

BTW, I think Miley is a really beautiful girl with her short blonde hair when she isn't sticking her tongue out to look like a drunk giraffe.

the fact that he shoots for vogue and harper's bazaar makes his subjects think what he does is "art" and "fashion" because by the time their guard is down he gets them to do those raunchy things that only a p*rn star would do, oh yeah he also shot Sasha Grey the p*rn star for Penthouse magazine

So much hypocritical pearl clutching in this thread. Meanwhile you go to a shoot of Richardson's in one of the magazine threads and everyone's praising it when it's the same thing.

Madonna, Rihanna, a dozen other female celebrities do/did this kind of thing. Miley is allowed to do this if she wants to. From what we outsiders know, she's doing this on her own volition and with specific intent (push boundaries, something the fashion fans on here praise in a designer but never in a celebrity). Good for her.

^^^ It's hardly hypocrisy. I feel it's just people seeing what an attention-seeking wannabe "Hanna Montana" is, and calling her out on it.

You can't compare her "multi-millionaire girl desperately seeking attention by going smutty" route to Madonna, or Rihanna. Madonna did it 30 years ago when even the word "virgin" was offensive in a song title and she became an agent provocateur with a point that always put her at odds with the general masses. Rihanna's ghetto-smut always felt genuine because she is that girl with that attitude. Miley's just adopting a tried-and-true "sexy!" persona more as a gimmick. She's a Disney-veteran and stands for all that's corporate and calculated, so the persona is a tad on the phony side. I wouldn't be surprised if this new Miley was her dad's idea-- you know, Mr. Gimmick himself, Billy "Achey Breaky Heart" Cyrus.
