Tell me a little bit about yourself
My name is Mirte Maas. I’m 18 years old. I love surfing in the summertime and ice skating in the winter.
How did you start your career in modeling?
I started modeling a couple of years ago in Holland. I was still in High School so my availability was limited. During this time I was introduced to Women Management, when I finished school I went to New York in August 2009 for Fashion Week. The first thing I did was to open Alexander Wang’s show which was amazing! I did a lot of shows after that.
Your career is really taking off this year, how are you finding it?
It’s so much fun. It’s so different from being in school. When you’re in school everything is planned out, you know what you’re doing the following week. Now I could be anywhere next week. The not knowing is really exciting because you never know where you’ll be and who you’re going to meet.
What have been your favourite jobs so far and why?
That’s a hard question. What I do know is that there’s a lot of waiting around especially on shoots with a lot of girls but that can also be fun because there’s a lot of Dutch girls these days that I can sit around with and have a cup of tea and a good laugh.
What type of jobs attract you the most? Any job on a tropical island. I prefer a warm climate. I love jobs when photographers give you the freedom to really express yourself in front of the camera. I love to jump around and hang upside down.
Do you have any funny or interesting stories about shoots you’ve done? Yes, it was actually for LOVE magazine. I had to lay down on (the Designer of Calvin Klein) Kevin Carrigan’s lap wearing lingerie. I found that most interesting.
Can you tell us about anything you have coming up soon? I’m in the runway story in Italian Vogue shot by Steven Meisel and I’m in the Balenciaga campaign.
Who would you really like to work with?
David Sims, Inez and Vinoodh and Mario Testino are among the many.
Who are your favourite photographers?
Steven Meisel is the quickest and most creative photographer I have ever worked with. He makes the shoot really fun and comfortable. The mood is always exciting.
Who are your favourite designers?
Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Valentino and Balenciaga.
Who are your favourite models?
I love Magdelena’s face. It really stands out. Personally I like Patricia Van Der Vliet, Cecile Sinclair and Willemijn Koppelman. They’re good model friends of mine.
How do you describe your style?
In the Winter it is comfortable and warm especially in cold New York. I wear leggings underneath my pants which isn’t the most charming. I love to wear little feminine dresses in the summer. My style is starting to change since being so exposed to so many creative people but comfort is always key.
What inspires you?
I have no clue.
What’s the most important quality a model needs to have?
To be positive and optimistic all the time. To bring happiness and excitement to every situation
What ambition would you like to achieve?
To find something that I really love to do. I had no idea what I wanted to study in school. Right now I love to model.
If you had one wish what would it be?
To be healthy forever.
