Models step out in prison garb
From correspondents in Rome
January 30, 2004

FASHION models took to the catwalk in Rome's biggest jail today to show off their style for 300 female inmates in a bid by Italy's thriving fashion industry to throw the prisoners a lifeline.

The show was held to highlight a new, justice ministry-approved project to give specialist fashion industry training to inmates and prepare them for life on the outside, according to the AltaRoma fashion agency which organised the event at Rome's Rebibbia prison.

From next month, stylists and fashion historians will give courses in the prison's female wing, and students will present their final couture work at a special show in July.

"From September, the group of new fashion workers will be ready to accept commissions from theatres, television and the film industry and be able to receive market prices for their work," AltaRoma said.

boo!!!

thumbs down to that :yuk:

 (while other students have to work hard and pay for fashion school!!!) :innocent:

Fair enough. You fashion students must feel short changed eh?
Well I do think its a good Idea to educate people while they are in jail. You wouldnt want them to come out worse now would you. Would you...

I'm all for vocational training in prison. I just wish they had showed clothing, rather than lingerie...

well , i like the idea, I thinkt he clothes are horrible  , but im glad tehya re giving them an oportunity, i seriouslyd oubt any of tehse peopel are going to get juobs in high fashion so i dount think theya re "takeing" any thing from fashion students.

i wasnt referring to myself. thank god i graduated 4 years ago and wasnt short ofmoney but IT IS wrong to educate people on something so trivial when they did something to harm the society

I don't think it's fair that they get specialist training

They should be educated though, they have a right to that :ninja:

Seemingly the common criminal tends to be much more creative than the average 'law-abiding' citizen.

I don't have a problem with it, but were it my taxes paying perhaps I would.

getting educated in FASHION is not what i consider a necessity when emprisoned (for whatever reason).

education in "social behaviour" would be more suitable..

this idea seems like a BIG JOKE to me

I have to say that I think it's a good idea! Learning a trade, mastering a skill you can be proud of, is important to some of these women.

What it said in the article is "to give specialist fashion industry training to inmates and prepare them for life on the outside"; this can't be a bad thing in my book. It doesn't exactly say what kind of training either; they might simply be trained to be skilled workers. We need those! And even if they are trained in design, it's not like everyone who goes through design school becomes a good designer... You need some artistry/taste/feeling for that.

And honestly, if this jail program should happen to produce what could be the Chanel of our century, wouldn't the fashion world gain by it?

think its not a bad idea it helps calm down the environment

well prisoners are educate in social behavior, peopel go to prison for reasons beyond they just felt like robing some body ,a lot fo peopel come from BAD familys and BAD backroudns and they are not fortunet anof to stay in school, go to college, get a job. liek you or other people are.

Im nto saying that it is an excuse for what they did, btu you ahve to give people a chance, why doutn they deserve to learn about fashion?

would you eb less upset if tehy learned abotu cars? that would take away from people spending time learning about cars.

and if you don't educate people and help them get jobs etc. tehy will just go back to hurting other people.

cars??? haha. .. thats in the same league.

i agree to a certain point but we are talking leisure here... and i just believe firmly that prison is not for leisure...and fashion fits into that category in some way

i dont get upset, just bothered when these things get encouraged. it just shows how hypocritical our society is. put someone in prison but give them the opportunity to educate themselves in a 'leisure sector'. then they might as well, stay home do what they got to do, but under police protection. :ninja:
thats just my view :flower:

All I know is that we need more films about women in prison in the classic 1970s exploitation style. Women in Cages rocks!
