Models who Defined the 2010 Decade

Thought it would be fun to make a thread to discuss the faces who've impressed us over the past 10 years, and who we think will make it big in the next decade.
Imo, for the first 7 years of 2010s we've seen pretty much the same models from the previous decade in campaigns and on covers. And to be quite frank, most of them looked alike and had near nondescript personalities because that's what the fashion system wanted from them. I don't miss it personally. Though I do think the one advantage they had over most was working in a system that encouraged storytelling and production value in photoshoots.
It was only over the past 3/4 years that we are seeing a stronger shift to diverse beauty ideals and I'm not talking about race, shape or any sort of identity politics, just plain old superficial beauty with some individuality and attitude. The likes of Natalie W, Rianne, Fernanda Ly, Dilone, Ruth Bell, Selena Forrest, Frederikke, and...chooking while I'm typing this, Lineisy, Mica and Adwoa

2010s was definitely a game-changing decade for the modelling industry in many ways. From Anna Jagodzinska and Karmen Pedaru's (there was a 3rd model, name escapes me) NEXT lawsuit to underage models, to working conditions, the slow crumbling of Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated, exposing sexual misconduct and more calls for diversity. All which I think has pushed the industry under the public's magnifying glass, which is really like a double edged sword


Looking ahead, I'd like to see less of Kendall, Gigi and the Supers, and more of...

I personally prefer the early years when the models of the previous decade were still on top and in every campaign. I agree that this decade has been a really big turning point for fashion in general (many positive changes for sure), but I can't say I'm a big fan of whatever happened with the models. Sure, there are faces that are very dear to me but there's this big trend about really random, ordinary looking women or even worse, Instagram approved beauties being booked for fashion gigs and I hate that. I hate how fashion industry doesn't even feel exclusive anymore, it's all so accessible like - OMG! You get 40k likes on your beauty posts wanna come work for us?? It's so annoying. Last night I saw Vogue refer to Karl's vintage collections as ''Instagrammable'' and I wanted to f*cking sue them for that disrespect. Instagrammable... Jesus Christ. Instagram models are not and will never be real models.
That's one thing I hate the most about this decade.

Models who define this decade are definitely Cara Delevingne, Sasha Luss (both thanks to tumblr in my case, lol), Kendall Jenner and the Hadids. We may not like them, but they're the supers of this decade and we can't deny that success. Now I could add more names to this group (generally any model who graced Vogue US covers I believe), but I feel like these would be the most 'renowned' names.

Now, does that mean they're the best this decade had to offer? No. Not in my opinion at least. I'd have to go with:

If I think about modeling as a craft and the business that it is, i.e. beyond only high fashion and inclusive of the high paying commercial gigs, visibility, covers, mainstream popularity, and evolution through the years working, only two models come to mind who have defined the last decade: Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls. I think in the next decade the newer "insta-girls" will claim the crown, but as they've really only been around circa 2015, I don't think they qualify as "definitive." I know these two girls aren't as popular on this blog, but they are owed their dues.

Kloss is a commercial powerhouse and her "Fashion" credentials are quite formidable: All those seasons as the Dior only girl, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan (at the peak of the brand), De la Renta, Jean Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton, Herrera, etc etc. She and her team established her as that "All American" supermodel and man, did she nail it. Then, as demonstrated in that list above, she's the Vogue girl of the decade, covering almost every edition. I watched Karlie evolve from gawky fashion girl into massive commercial power player, television star and full on celebrity. It may seem easy, but that is really not an easy thing to do, otherwise all these fashion girls would be right there with her.

Joan started the decade with that Gucci pre-fall campaign, which was quite the shock at the time because she really came from nowhere and hasn't been reined in since. She's the model of color that defied all the odds. I admit that her work now isn't as impressive as the first few years after her big break, when she had that hunger, but it doesn't detract from her body of work: A black girl with only-girl campaigns for Chanel and Fendi? When last did any model land that? Jenner for Fendi in 2016, I believe was the last. Five seasons of campaigns Gucci, multiple for Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Moschino, Versace, Balmain, Bottega etc etc. She's done campaigns for almost every major fashion brand. Then, in spite of the bias against people of color on magazines, she's managed to land multiple Intl editions of Vogue covers, twice having global cover deals for Bazaar and Elle. She's also a huge commercial powerhouse, going into a decade with that Estee Lauder contract and multiple product lines for different brands under her name. And of course, evolving from just a face, to someone with mainstream recognition.

Anyway, I say all that to say, that while there are "Fashion" queens - those high fashion darlings who, I believe this blog/forum most reveres, "model," as a brand of the individual, that defines this decade, belong to those two. And like those heated arguments back in 2012 when MDC had to update their rankings to reflect a new #1, I'm still not able to say which of these girls outperformed the other over the last decade, all things considered.

*PS I think Cara D could have been in that bracket, but she showed up, made her mark and bowed out of the game too quickly.
