Most Overpriced Designer? #1

^ i know! i just came back on this thread after hearing that!

I think more designers like Erin Fetherston are unjustified. Shoddy workmanship and fabrics but you're still asked to pay the price.

I think the reason that Balmain is so over priced is so that the clothes can remain exclusive. Maybe the jeans and jackets are all worth probably 100 plus or 200 each, then i think a lot of people would buy them because they are so popular. and if everyone has Balmain, then it wouldn't be so special now would it?

^ Of course. In outlet Balmain dress goes from $10`000-15`000 to $2`000 or even less, less then other designers charge. I vaguely remember that Dior Home used to have extreme prices in the beginning and then it slowly went to normal (a for high-fashion house), even then underwear is now down from $100-200 to $50.
That phenomenon is actually very nicely explained in one South Park episode (Ses 5 "Cartmanland"). You can watch it on southparkstudios.com

I remember I was in the Emporio Armani store when I went on vacaton in Dallas, Texas. I went shopping there and chose out the most simple piece of clothing (assuming it was proportional to price) and the shirt cost $890! I couldn't believe it, there was no pattern, just a standard shirt, although I must admit it was made of the most exquisite material, but that doesn't justify the price!

I think they raise the prices like they do so that common folk can't buy them, as in only upper class can afford to wear such clothes. It would bring the label down if people who shop at Walmart (not that there is anything wrong with that) shop just as much as designer labels like Gucci, Armani etc.

EDIT: Just read ~Fixation~'s post, exclusive was the post I was looking for :P

^i've not had that same experience with emporio armani. i've bought many button-down shirt in the $100-200s that have stood the test of time.

Hérmes, the legendary handbags are just ridiculously overpriced -- though the rarity and the materials they use kind of makes up for it.

And I have to agree with Chanel and Balmain being overpriced, though I have to add Lanvin to my list.

Are you sure you weren't in Giorgio Armani? I've never heard of Emporio's prices being that high.

that Balmain destroyed cotton jersey t-shirt is pathetic... i wouldn't even pay $5 for that.

Marc by Marc Jacobs is way to expensive for what you buy

not to mention it's all made in china, cheapest fabrics ever. i actually think for the most part mbmj is ugly really. looks nice on the runway, in real life not so much.

chanel

i really hare high style designers because they make shoes that look great but hurt like heck after wearing them for 30min. i have a pair of martin margiela flats that i paid a lot for and the quality sucks the bottom sole wore away after wearing them for 2 hours. i don't get why high style designers make bad quality items and sell them for the price of a moths rent. i could have gotten shoes for 20 bucks with better quality. i have a pair of miu miu boots that pintch the heck out of my toes too. it's like these designers don't care about the comfort of the people that are buying thier overprice shoes they just make them look pretty to attract customers and take their loot. if far less expenive brands can make comfy quality shoes that u can keep wearing for years why can't the expensive brands do it.

i just needed to vent about this issue i have with luxury designer shoes. it's been on my mind for months now and i didn't know where to vent but thanks for starting this thread.

you're totally right about the fabric. i couldn't believe the quality when i went into the marc jacobs store in soho ny. the fabric felt so cheap, u wash it once and it's done. far worse than forever 21 and even they have good quality items for dirt cheap.

a lot of big brands make disposable clothing. maybe because the wealthy clients they target wouldnt be cought dead wearing the same piece of clothing twice so designers don't worry too much about quality pieces that will withstand the test of time. thats my only excuse

on the other hand balenciaga had really good quality pieces when i went into their store but that may have been just the 2008 winter collection. i hear thier $2,000.00 black leather jackets turn brown after a while of wearing them

with balenciaga it is like that with the bags though, that the colours change. black bags fading to brown. well i think people should just look after them better/only buy them if they dont mind. its not like thats bad quality its just the way they are made!

I never really had problems with many designers about their quality. It's like when people tell me to switch to Mac because whenever they use a PC it breaks on them; but for me, I've never had a single problem with PC breaking down or acting ********. Seriously, when people complain about the quality of some designers, it's usually their own fault for being abusive to the product, or had bad luck and got a malfunctioning merchandise (which is normal, not all brands are perfect).

But I do agree that some designers are still over-priced, especially when you compare their workmanship with other brands.

I was flipping through the latest issue of Harpers Bazaar and I was shocked at the prices of some of the garments. Nowadays, dresses aren't in the thousands, they are in the tens of thousands. I have noticed especially the prices of Miu Miu garments have gone up by a lot, possibly to combat the sinking ship that is the Prada Group.
