(NEW YORK) Bjork fanatics rejoice! 66 North Iceland, the chilly island-country’s biggest label, has opened a temporary store in SoHo. Designed by Pompei, A.D., the interior mimics the otherworldly Icelandic terrain of volcanoes, glaciers, geysers and waterfalls. Shelves are lined with moss. Gravel covers the floor and huge scenic color photographs flank the walls. In a lounge area, clips of Icelandic films play on a flat-screen TV. An “Ice Bar” serves—what else—Icelandic spring water. Among the partners in the temporary 2500 square foot retail space are GQ, Assouline Publishing, Icelandair, Time Out Kids New York and Reyka Vodka.
66 North was started by Hans Kristjansson, who produced the trim-fitting, minimalist, protective clothing for commercial fisherman exposed to the harsh weather of Iceland, which sits at the edge of the Arctic Circle (brrr.) Items like the Glymur Softshell Jacket and a Kaldi Arctic Hat have been seen on everyone from Scarlett Johansson and Uma Thurman to Jude Law.
“We feel that our pop-up store at 158 Mercer Street will introduce a brand that has a confluence of culture, ease of lifestyle, and fashion strength,” promises Sharon Prince, the President of 66 North.
In addition to shopping, the space will host events, like a concert by native Icelandic cult band Sigur Ros and the launch of selected Assouline books. If 66 North’s extreme weather gear doesn’t warm your bones, the drink tastings by Reyka Vodka surely will.
