NEW YORK FASHION WEEK BITES
Best summation of the trends emerging on the catwalk: "Tweed coats, pencil skirts and prim blouses - if fashion is a mirror of the times, the news for the Democrats is grim" - Suzy Menkes, for the International Herald Tribune
Celeb count: high, with Bianca and Jade Jagger and Ray Liotta at Calvin Klein, newly engaged couple Salman and Padma at DVF, Helena Christensen at Imitation of Christ, Ja Rule and Maya at Luca Luca, Ashley Judd at Tuleh, Michael Stipe at Libertine, SJP and Claire Danes at Narciso, Eve at J Mendel, cool kids Sofia Coppola, Vincent Gallo and Zoe Cassavetes at Anna Sui, along with Ellen Von Unwerth, Billy Joel at Oscar de la Renta, Kristin Davis at Michael Kors and…
Daryl Hannah at Marc Jacobs. Her appearance is worthy of extraordinary mention, as Hannah is famously reclusive, having grown-up diagnosed autistic, and this was her first ever fashion show. She was joined by Carolyn Murphy and boyfriend Brandon Boyd of Incubus, Donald Trump and Melanie Klauss, Raf Simmons, Terry Richardson, Jefferson Hack, Anna Sui, Vincent Gallo, and actor Dylan McDermott with Shiva Rose. And then there was…
Liza Minnelli, being effusive about the Kenneth Cole collection backstage. But don't expect her to be wearing anything but Halston for her upcoming court appearances. "I was very lucky, I was dressed by Halston, so I wear what I wear to everything."
US Vogue editrix Anna Wintour was joined on Zac Posen's front row by her pretty daughter Bea Shaffer, wearing Posen, her son Charles Shaffer, and her beau Shelby Bryant, wearing Fashion Week's only bow tie.
Plus, Holly Hunter, ringside for pal Vera Wang, in a black Wang trousersuit. The 45-year-old actress wore Wang to accept her 1993 Oscar for The Piano, and probably will again for her nomination this year. "Vera understands dressing for a small woman," she explained.
Meanwhile Calvin Klein has no-commented rumours that Justin Timberlake was approached to be the new face/body of cK. Either way, we hear Justin couldn't consider putting on the pants formerly worn by Travis Fimmel and Freddie Ljunberg until he had consulted his grandmother.
The biggest upset of the week: Klein's designer Francisco Costa moving his show from Tuesday at 6pm to Thursday at 4pm, the slot reserved for James Coviello, blaming bad weather in Italy. "There were delays in key pieces coming," Costa said. "We decided to move later in the schedule. Sometimes these things happen."
The knock-on: Coviello had to bring his show forward an hour. "What they did was immoral," he told the Post. "The leader of our industry is doing the most horrendous thing. It's a very sad day for fashion. I used to work for Calvin - that's the worst part, not that I expect them to do anything for me personally, but as a fellow designer, they should." Roland Mouret finally occupied Klein's vacated slot.
Missing in action: Julie Chaiken, founder and ceo of Chaiken, wasn't backstage at the company's Bryant Park show this week. She and husband Scott Grigsby had their hands full looking after first child, Ethan Oliver Grigsby, born in January. She said: "You work some long hours and then it's all worth it." Sounds familiar.
