NEW YORK FASHION WEEK BITES

00220f.jpg

Best summation of the trends emerging on the catwalk: "Tweed coats, pencil skirts and prim blouses - if fashion is a mirror of the times, the news for the Democrats is grim" - Suzy Menkes, for the International Herald Tribune

Celeb count: high, with Bianca and Jade Jagger and Ray Liotta at Calvin Klein, newly engaged couple Salman and Padma at DVF, Helena Christensen at Imitation of Christ, Ja Rule and Maya at Luca Luca, Ashley Judd at Tuleh, Michael Stipe at Libertine, SJP and Claire Danes at Narciso, Eve at J Mendel, cool kids Sofia Coppola, Vincent Gallo and Zoe Cassavetes at Anna Sui, along with Ellen Von Unwerth, Billy Joel at Oscar de la Renta, Kristin Davis at Michael Kors and…

Daryl Hannah at Marc Jacobs. Her appearance is worthy of extraordinary mention, as Hannah is famously reclusive, having grown-up diagnosed autistic, and this was her first ever fashion show. She was joined by Carolyn Murphy and boyfriend Brandon Boyd of Incubus, Donald Trump and Melanie Klauss, Raf Simmons, Terry Richardson, Jefferson Hack, Anna Sui, Vincent Gallo, and actor Dylan McDermott with Shiva Rose. And then there was…

Liza Minnelli, being effusive about the Kenneth Cole collection backstage. But don't expect her to be wearing anything but Halston for her upcoming court appearances. "I was very lucky, I was dressed by Halston, so I wear what I wear to everything."

US Vogue editrix Anna Wintour was joined on Zac Posen's front row by her pretty daughter Bea Shaffer, wearing Posen, her son Charles Shaffer, and her beau Shelby Bryant, wearing Fashion Week's only bow tie.

Plus, Holly Hunter, ringside for pal Vera Wang, in a black Wang trousersuit. The 45-year-old actress wore Wang to accept her 1993 Oscar for The Piano, and probably will again for her nomination this year. "Vera understands dressing for a small woman," she explained.

Meanwhile Calvin Klein has no-commented rumours that Justin Timberlake was approached to be the new face/body of cK. Either way, we hear Justin couldn't consider putting on the pants formerly worn by Travis Fimmel and Freddie Ljunberg until he had consulted his grandmother.

The biggest upset of the week: Klein's designer Francisco Costa moving his show from Tuesday at 6pm to Thursday at 4pm, the slot reserved for James Coviello, blaming bad weather in Italy. "There were delays in key pieces coming," Costa said. "We decided to move later in the schedule. Sometimes these things happen."

The knock-on: Coviello had to bring his show forward an hour. "What they did was immoral," he told the Post. "The leader of our industry is doing the most horrendous thing. It's a very sad day for fashion. I used to work for Calvin - that's the worst part, not that I expect them to do anything for me personally, but as a fellow designer, they should." Roland Mouret finally occupied Klein's vacated slot.

Missing in action: Julie Chaiken, founder and ceo of Chaiken, wasn't backstage at the company's Bryant Park show this week. She and husband Scott Grigsby had their hands full looking after first child, Ethan Oliver Grigsby, born in January. She said: "You work some long hours and then it's all worth it." Sounds familiar.

Raf Simons at overhyped Marc Jacobs? Please tell me he hasn't succomb to that...

Well I was in NY for fashion week and must say I was quite disapointed with the shows I attended, I guess I was expecting so much more, a larger venue and more dazzle, it was just sort of bland. It was nice but dont think ill go back unless I show myself or get invites to some of the bigger shows, even then I can just watch them online without the hassle.

what do you mean larger venue? I attended some shows during fashion week but the ones I went to were held in "the tents" at Bryant Park, it's a park and it's nyc I don't think it will ever get much bigger and not all designers show at the park, some show in lofts, restaraunts, galleries etc.

friends that were in NY for the shows were a bit dissapointed
but that was not because of the size of the tents,
more from the state of the shows

i prefer smaller intimate shows in alternative venues myself :ninja:

did you enjoyed NYFW oria?

Well I was at some of the shows at Bryant Park, Luca Luca, Tuleh and some of the smaller shows as well. Compaqred to fashion week here in LA the tents are about the same size and as many celebs show up at shows here in LA since its so close. I am hoping fashion week in LA will get bigger and bigger and alot oft he houses will eventually move west to warmer weather, cheaper labor and the center of the entertainment industry which has become a driving factor in fashion.

haha no not even carlos miele my fellow brasileiro could make me feel better about it. I only made it to 3 of them and one I had to be dragged to. I am not a fan of fall fashion maybe it's the south american in me but I prefer spring and summer those shows I adored :P

well it is an opinion the first la fashion week I saw on the t.v was very tacky and I don't know the models were  in their presentation of the clothes. so I do wish them luck but big designers moving to la over ny? I don't think so but that is me. It took years to build this up nyers are fashion concious people even if it is mostly black  :ninja:

Agreed - I have alot of brazilian friends and love brazilian people and culture. I wanted to attend the Carlos Mile show but it got bumped to thursday and I left wednesday. Gustavo Arrango was a good show I did attend, hes from Colombia now living in Puerto Rico, a very sexy latin line.

Like Lena said, the more interesting of NY showed off-calendar or somewhere more private and intimate. The big shows were absolute crap to me.

To paraphrase Inigo from The Princess Bride, I do not think "extraordinary" means what the writer of this article thinks it means. If the ghost of Elvis showed up, that's one thing. But Daryl Hannah?

As for the NY shows, the establishment is happy. Sellers are selling and buyers are buying. The fashion press is happy because they have stuff to report on.

The segment that isn't happy is made up of people that want to form the new guard and challenge existing design. Nothing new about that, Hegel wrote about it a long time ago. My feeling is this: with so many collections out there, anyone who is massively disappointed with NY as a whole might possibly not like fashion.
