New York Times T Style Holiday 2008 : Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes by Solve Sundsbo

Im happy to see Tiiu has a new editorial and I love it! Im too kinda sick of Akrans style.. but this works great together.

Not bad at all.

And I love the Tiiu ed.

Katie's cover is gorgeous and I love Tiiu's ed! It looks like a good issue.

the covers are just hideous to me. how long will it take for people to stop justifying someone's blank image with that 'old good old days of hollywood' aesthetic? sick.

I love Katie's cover the most, Tiu's ed is really cute and colorful love it as well. This magazine seems to have great content cant wait to see more

Yes. At times I get very tired Ye Olde Hollywood Schtick when people want to spruce up celebrities. Too predictable and they almost never do something interesting with it, just look at some ol' photos and replicate while we all get to play "Which actress with the far superior career are the stylists trying to recall by putting some chick in hair rollers and a long dress?"

However it works here moreso for Tom than Katie. He has a stronger (negative) identity "IRL" and yet here is an ed which overcomes all that and lends him the gravitas that he once used to command all the time. And it's done by visually referring to an age when Hollywood was even more about manufactured image control. So I like it ^_^.

The Tiiu ed is nice, even though I'm not a fan of Akrans. Are there any other eds?

i just hate the idea of those two being portrayed in the film noir style. it just feels so wrong! :yuk:

Personally, I don't see how the old Hollywood aesthetic is sick...

I think with movie stars you are always going to have pictures like that because ultimately the iconography of Hollywood goes back to that as that is a part of the history behind such celebrities. To represent film stars as classic icons themselves is tedious but to borrow from that image in order to represent people as themselves doesn't bother me. This isn't Katie being Gene Tierney or Tom reenacting Gregory Peck, it's simply stylized imagery akin to the old style of photography.

Also I think for these two people this works. I don't think anyone was justifying their image based on these pictures. Quite frankly it would be hard for people to do so given their ongoing antics. I think there was a positive response to the covers in spite of their subjects. You've got two people who have in the course of a couple years become self parodying tabloid pariahs and Solve managed to make them look austere and beautiful. He managed to make me at least forget momentarily their collective bull****. It's an accomplishment as far as I'm concerned.

And yes I still like Tom but god I have to call a spade a spade.
