This Season's Model Star: Meet Phillipa
EVERY season has a breakout model who makes the industry sit up and take note - this season it is Phillipa Hemphrey. Spotted in her local Waitrose in Kent by Premier founder Carole White, Hemphrey took to the catwalk of some of fashion month's most famous designers - from Céline and Christopher Kane to Nicolas Ghesquière's Louis Vuitton debut - and, for now, she's just taking it as it comes.
"It's weird saying I have done my first show season because it still feels so surreal, and I can't believe it has happened," the model told us. "I would love to walk for all the big shows in fashion week, also to do a campaign for a large brand would be amazing. I can't believe it would ever happen, but to be on the cover of Vogue would be unreal! Ultimately I just want to enjoy the whole experience and make people proud - soppy, I know!"
White - who has managed the careers of some of the world's biggest models, including Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer - doesn't often spot a model who has the combination of height and beauty needed to make it at the highest level, but says Hemphrey has what it takes. Known for supporting its models if they choose to work while continuing to study, Premier's White and her daughter Sissy - who is now Hemphrey's booker - are taking things slowly.
"Phillipa is still at school getting ready to do her A-level exams, so we will take it all slowly," White explained. "She has done some great shows in her first season, but we did not want her to do too many and so we were very selective. She will do the best editorial, but it will be limited because of her school year. She is a very bright girl - very organised and focused on everything she does, and she has determination and strength of character. This is what you need to be a successful model these days."
And for Hemphrey - who was such a tomboy that she elected not to tell her parents when she was first scouted, deeming it "really embarrassing" - her first show season was a great introduction to what will hopefully be a lasting career.
"The thing that has surprised me the most is how nice everyone is. I was expecting it to be very unfriendly but everyone really looks out for each other, which has added to the enjoyment of it all," she said. "I have loved the whole experience of my first show season so I can't pick out a particular favourite moment, but the adrenaline I had after doing my first show - opening JW Anderson - and then every show after that has been amazing. I feel so lucky to have been taken to Milan and Paris and, now I have experienced some modelling, I definitely want to do it full-time first and see where it can take me in life. Hopefully, all being well, I can do it for a long as possible."
