Philippa Moroney - Vogue Australia Fashion Editor

JUNE 20, 2018

With roles at Australia’s leading glossies; RUSSH, Harper’s BAZAAR and VOGUE – we talk to Sydney-based Philippa Moroney about creating professional opportunities and the work ethic that led her to become Fashion Editor and Market Director of VOGUE Australia.

Describe your title and role.
I am the Fashion Editor & Market Director at VOGUE.

What was your formal background or education?
Fashion has always been the vocation I have worked towards, after completing a double degree in both Arts & Business I was lucky to land a role at RUSSH working under Stevie Dance. From there I was hired as fashion Assistant at Harpers BAZAAR by Edwina McCann where I worked with Christine Centenera for 2 years. Following on from that I was offered a position at VOGUE; and 4 years later I am still as inspired as ever.

What inspired you to pursue your career?
I read a lot of magazines in my early teens. When friends were reading Cosmo or Cleo I was reading British, American and Australian editions of VOGUE and Harpers BAZAAR. I love how the images transported me to somewhere international, like I was being let into a special club by absorbing the pages; I was fascinated by the designers, the clothes, the jewellery and accessories. I was interested in how everything came together to create the images on the pages.

What has been the most memorable or rewarding moment in your career thus far?

Every time I work on a shoot, it is rewarding. To see something build from initial idea to concept development, sourcing, editing, fitting, and then working with a creative team to bring the vision to life- there is nothing better. I also have travelled to some incredible destinations for shoots, and fashion shows including Paris, London and New York.

Do you say you have a mentor, someone who has influenced you?
I have been lucky enough to work with the best of the best. Both my editor Edwina McCann and fashion Director Christine Centenera have been incredibly supportive to me over my career and have influenced me greatly.

How do you measure success?
I stopped measuring my success against those of my peers a long time ago. It was liberating, you learn to run your own race. I measure my success against the goals I set myself; and the feedback on the work that I do.

How do you feel about the future of your industry?
I am excited by the future of publishing and the digital landscape within Australia. At Vogue we are be able to speak to so many different audiences across our various platforms that the sky is the limit for ideas that we can bring to life. Overall, I think it’s an exciting time for the fashion industry. Australian designers are doing so incredibly well both in Australia and Internationally; there is so much talent that is gaining more and more momentum; and the world is really taking note.

What advice would you give someone following, or influenced by your professional path?
Jump on great opportunities and have faith in yourself that you can do it; hard work and dedication does pay off.

What challenges have you experienced?
I think I work in an industry where you’re thrown hundreds of little challenges each week and you work on how to resolve them quickly and effectively. Luckily for me my challenges are not life and death.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
That’s a tricky one… I’ve just had my first child now, so I know that kids will definitely feature! I honestly just hope that I’m happy and satisfied creatively, working on projects that I’m passionate about and enjoying family life. And maybe, just maybe a few steps closer to that elusive “work life balance”.
