Pierre Woods: Ralph Lauren Model

By Jenn Fusion

We haven’t really talked to many models here at Fan Quarterly, so when the opportunity to interview supermodel Pierre Woods arrived, I was ecstatic! I recognized him from Ralph Lauren campaigns, but he’s also graced the cover of GQ magazine, strutted his stuff on the runways from New York to Milan, and appeared in TV commercials for JC Penney.

You have to love Pierre's story. He had won a modeling competition in college, but he risked losing his athletic scholarship if he accepted. So, he finished his degree and went to work refinancing mortgages for Wells Fargo after graduation. One night, he heard a radio ad for a model search and he went to the casting call. After making it through the first rounds, he was told he’d have to pay $600 and head to a Washington D.C. event to make it to the next round.

Just as he was leaving, an agency representative stopped him — offering to waive the fee and cover his expenses if he’d work the registration table. As they say “the rest is history.” Pierre walked out of the event with a Ford Models Chicago contract and kept his day job until the trips became more exotic. These days, he’s represented by New York Model Management and travels coast to coast and internationally for shoots. Here’s what he had to say about life in the fast lane…

Fan Quarterly: So… Are you the next Tyson Beckford?

Pierre Woods: I get asked that question a lot. Tyson has been a beacon for male models… many would say a symbol of what a successful model should be… so if I can reach that kind of status, I will be satisfied with my career.

FQ: What upcoming gigs are you most excited about?

PW: The Ralph Lauren Fall ’12 shoot which will be in stores like Macy’s. I always look forward to working with the team at Ralph Lauren. Also, there have been talks of a video segment for RL. I don’t know much about the project at the moment, but my agents seem very excited.

FQ: Modeling comes in all different forms – from print, to TV commercials, to runway – and you’ve done them all. What is your favorite type of modeling and why?

PW: I love print and TV commercials both equally. I have more experience with print work, but I see TV as my next frontier.

FQ: Which other models do you have the most fun shooting with?

PW: It’s always fun for me to work with people that I see in ads all the time. I’ve had the pleasure of working with famous Ralph Lauren models Nacho Figueras and Valentina Zelvaeva. I shot with Victoria’s Secret model Chanel Iman and Models.com’s number one male model Sean O'Pry. I also did a Valentine’s day video segment with Victoria’s Secret models Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes.

FQ: People often refer to the lifestyle associated with modeling. Tell us about the best industry party you’ve attended.

PW: New York Models (my agency in NYC) threw a NY Fashion Week party last year. Tyson Beckford was invited because the show he was hosting granted the winner a contract with New York Models. I have always been compared to him, so it was amazing to finally meet him in person.

FQ: From your experience, what are the top 3 pros and cons of a modeling career?

PW: Pros: Meeting new and amazing people on shoots, traveling to exotic places and knowing about the latest fashion trends before most people. Cons: There are no true guidelines with modeling, meaning no one technique can work for all aspiring models, so it’s hard to give sound across the board advice to people. Also, it’s difficult to know if you’re spending too much time in the wrong market.

FQ: What three articles of clothing would you find it hard to live without?

PW: The right pair of jeans, a fitted t-shirt and a nice sports coat!

FQ: Can you recall a particularly surreal ad campaign where you looked at yourself when the shoot was all over and thought, ‘Wow, is that really me?’

PW: My first Ralph Lauren Campaign (Fall 2008). I thought I looked different mainly because I had more hair then than I do now.

FQ: Surely there must be times where women are either mesmerized by you or outright recognize you from one of your modeling gigs. Can you share an odd, funny, flattering, or memorable fan encounter with us?

PW: While at the airport traveling to L.A. for a shoot, I was selected by the TSA to be randomly searched. One of the TSA agents found my modeling portfolio — and, as she was flipping through the pages, said that she recognized me and called over more TSA agents to check out my portfolio. The search turned into a Q&A and ended with me signing autographs as everyone else passed by. I was flattered and somewhat annoyed because if I were in a rush I would have surely missed my flight. Luckily, I like to get to the airport a couple of hours early!

FQ: What’s a typical week like in the life of Pierre Woods?

PW: My days are slightly different now that I have newborn twins, so the bulk of my free time is spent with them. Working out, researching (checking various fashion blogs and magazines for fashion trends and styles for shooting), making trips to the agency, clothing fittings for upcoming shoots and finally the shoots. Soon, acting classes will be a part of my weekly schedule.

FQ: Do you have any career ambitions outside of modeling that you may pursue in the future?

PW: On-camera acting.

FQ: What are three little-known facts about you?

PW: I love playing board games, I’m a huge comic book fan, and one of my dreams is to play a role in a movie based on a comic book.

FQ: What three words best describe your personality and why?

PW: Relaxed, professional and approachable. I don’t let things stress me out, I always deliver what the client requests, and I try and help others trying to break into the industry.

FQ: I understand you received a full athletic scholarship to Illinois State University. Tell us more about your passion for sports.

PW: Yes, I did the high jump, 110 high hurdles, 400 hurdles and the 4×400 relay. I still follow track and field closely. I try to make it to track meets as often as I can. I’m going to the Grand Prix held in NY in June and I’m extremely excited for this year’s Olympics.

FQ: I’m sure you get this question a lot – but how do you stay in such great shape?

PW: I have a gym where I live. That way there is no excuse not to go. Actually I’m no gym rat; I just watch what I eat. I don’t have a specific diet but I use the reasoning – if I’m not being active why add the extra fuel?

FQ: Which 3 people most inspire you and why?

PW: Well, 4 people truly inspire me now. My wife — she possesses all of the traits I don’t have. My mother — she is the strongest person I know. And now my twin boys — they inspire me to be the best father I can be.

FQ: In what ways has your bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Economics helped in your career?

PW: The most basic concepts of marketing apply to my career from positioning myself in the proper market to understanding the role of self-promotion. When it comes to modeling, what better product to market than yourself?

FQ: In an interview with Style Talk, you describe your personal style as “professional.” Up until the 1960s, it seemed like suits, ties and hats were woven into the fabric Main Street America. Do you think some of these timeless classic trends are coming back in vogue, or has the mainstream fashion gravitated toward more edgy, grungy and casual looks? What are your personal opinions about the state of fashion right now?

PW: I believe that fashion has made it so that it is fully acceptable for a person to sport a variety of looks… tailoring to the idea of ‘dress as you feel.’ So, not only has the timeless classic trends come back, but now it is being integrated into main stream pop culture. Ralph Lauren has done wonders with keeping that look alive and well.
